I was wondering how much of a difference there is when fishing plastic worms and a jig on the bottom with a shakey head jig compared to a crappie jig? It seems to me like the only difference is the longer hook, but does it change the action of the worm at all or help with hooking them?
Im asking because i had good luck doing this at Beaver yesterday using the crappie jig, but I missed alot of bites, plus some are on sale pretty cheap on cabelas...
Thanks for any help.

The benifits you get using a shakey head style jig head are mainly the size of hook and the design of the head. The larger "bite" on the larger hooks allows you to use worms from 4"-6.5", which are probably the most popular sizes. The larger size hook will allow you to have more hook ups, with out a doubt. The shape of the head, will allow your bait to stand up, with the tail floating, which is why this bait is so effective. One more benefit is they also come in heavier sizes, which will allow you to fish deeper water more efficientlly.

RE:Shakey head jig vs regular crappie jig?
Dilbert molded me up some Do-It Round head Shakey's with 3/0 and 4/0 hooks. I love them. I can not seem to hook any rockbass with them though, unless I am using a 3" senko! That is a good thing too. The hook size and larger 4" - 6" worms have kept me in larger fish when I am throwing them. I espicially love them with a roboworm for the floating action.
