probably everyone who fishes might get some good use of it as well.

i dont carry anything in my pockets. anything of value - keys / phone / cam in a sealed floating case. if i or someone else, or the whole boat goes in, we still have a chance.

i recently learned if you do in, your first objective is to kick off your shoes. from there, you might have a chance.

fyi - im going to pickup the megabass pfd, spendy, but i would wear it all the time - plus you cant really put a price on your life now can you. check it, they are awesome.

I have a mustang survival PFD (the hydrostatic one) and I love it. I wear it all the time when I'm on the water and forget I even have it on (even in hot weather). Any PFD that you will actually wear is much more useful than one stowed away.

When I was 16, we had an 8' boat w/ trolling motor. We had trailer at Mardon for entire summer, it was great. But one day while bassin' the trees near swimming area, some jerkoff in a jetski spunout right in front of me. The wave came over the boat, flipped it and me over. I lost all my tackle, my poles, and battery. He took off never seen again. I sat atop the boat for 30mins until someone stopped to help. They towed the boat to the docks. When I flipped the boat back over I saw my box floating, somehow my tacklebox was sucked up to the boat. We waited a month until water levels lowered and waded into the shallows and recovered the battery. It still worked! Freakin jetskiers!!!!!

Just last weekend I lost an expensive crab pot and sinking line in 60" of water. No way would I go after it or even think about it.I can remember in the early squidding days We'd got to Myrtle Edwards while fishing on the low tide and get Squid jigs that got stuck on the pileons. Then sell them on the dock again for chump change to buy grub at the Happy Hooker bait stand.
When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.

i wouldnt jump into 60 ft of water for a rod or crabpot. You gotta know when and where its safe to jump in. Like 10 ft of water isnt that deep, But if there a rock pile under. That might not be a good idea. Just use your best judgement and make sure you got phelps swimming skills before you go.

Oh ya, Like Tdot said, take your shoes off, it helps alot...

I've had good luck retrieving gear from the bottom with the "redneck snagger".

Take a snap chain stringerundo all fo the snaps and bend the wires out so there's a 2" gap on each of them. Tie some rope to the chain, then drag it around where you lost the gear. If you've got line out, there's a very good chance that you'll be able to snag it & pull up the rod. If you don't have line out, it's still possible to grab the rod and wedge it against one of the guides, but the odds of success aren't as good. (50/50 max)

Its not a lakes depth that will kill you:-"

Its lung capacity and most importantly, the individuals ability to remain calm.
The majority of drownings occur when the victim hits the water. Its a natural reaction in colder waters for the body to gasp in sudden shock.

One time on the potomac my friends dad got a crank caught on some structure about 20ft down. He actually tried to get it out by tugging but ended up stripping down to his boxers and diving down 3 seperate times just guiding himself down with the line and eventually got it free. I would've paid money to see youd o this haha

crankbait! wow!!!

It has to be some expensive gear before i go into the water. It also has to be 10ft or less with the proper conditions....

Theres no crank bait worth going down 20ft for...I buy lures expecting to lose then eventually, but i dont expect to lose the rod and reel hahaha

If I loose a rod and reel in the water I will get it no matter how deep! But I'm not fishing with the walmart brands.
