Why does my favorite lake has green film?

Post by delyakguy » Mon Aug 25, 2008 12:07 pm

Within the last week, my favorite lake has a green film atop the water. It started after this crappy weather we have had over last 10 days or so. Is it from the weather change? It does help with fish being able to see me while fishing, but also makes it hard to see below water.

There were a few Lakes in the Yakama area with that green carpet algea.I noticed it Sat while over there.Same with Ellensburg and Cle Elum.
When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.

Actually I'm surprised you did not have it sooner. Most of the Spokane area lakes that get the algae bloom have had it from mid June.

This is normally the result of high nutrient content in the water leading to excessive algae growth. The nutrients may be natural, like in Coffeepot, or man made sources as in a lot of the Western waters.
Too much water, so many fish, too little time.

If the lake is green then your lure choice is simple GREEN If you cant see the bottom then the bass cant see you this makes for a very good fishing lake. I would fish over hangs and structure with a green pumpkin jig the bigger the better. Crank baits bright colors, fire tiger would be a good choice. A boat would come in handy or any float would work in a pinch. As a kid in Fl I used a inner tube it worked good and cheep!
Are you hung up again!

Read this, it explains the green film, also called turnover.

Usually happens later in the year, but I think we are in for a Dooozy of a winter.

I agree with the winter assessment. I am tuning up my snow blower early.
