Dinkfest @ Cassidy

Hit Cassidy for a couple of hours this evening. Bass are definitely on the bite! I caught at least 20 and probably missed another dozen.

Unfortunately, all of them were this size:



One broke off by wrapping around some branches. Not sure how big that one was. Probably a 30 pounder...

I was using 20# spiderwire and after getting wrapped by the 30 pounder, it was easier than it should have been to snap the line. I'm thinkin' spiderwire knot strength is not as good as power pro or tuff line. It's also stiffer, and it felt like there was more resistance going through the guides of my ugly stik. What do you guys think of spiderwire? I bought it on sale at Jerry's but I don't think I'll be buying it again. I've still got some 10lb "Ugly Braid" that I haven't tried yet. Hopefully it's decent...

Speaking of ugly stiks, this trip was the "maiden voyage" for this particular rod. It's a 7 foot ultralight, but still has some serious backbone. I've got about a half-dozen ultralight spinning rods, but this one is unique. The other rods are good for panfish and small trout. This rod is hefty for an ultralight and is paired with a mid-sized reel (Pflueger Asaro) for balance.

Your funny. You shouldn't lie so much, you know it was probably only a 20lber.
You'll find that if you don't tie a quality knot with braid the coating on the line will cause it to slip out very easy. PowerPro is a better quality braid anyways so I would stick with that. Knot won't slip out and the diameter is amazing and line strength, well it's braid, of coarse it's strong. The other positive to PowerPro is that they use 4 strands (making the line square) as opposed to most braids which use 3 (makes the line flat). To me SpiderWire is like the Wal-Mart of braids. I haven't had a very positive experience using it.

Spiderwire "walmart quality well thats just rude" J/J I actually am very pleased with spiderwire it has proven flawlessly on my spinning tackle for dropshotting smallies,I use 10lb test "2lb dia." hooked up with a double uni-knot to vanish floro 6-10' leader.Its great no line twist cast a country mile and superior bite detection and hook sets at 20-30'.Yes i know this goes with all braids but i will put this braid right up side by side with the best of them.Tight lines

i also dont care for spiderwire very much. powerpro all the way. atleast you got out and caught some fish man. i made it out last night and was able to stay for like 30 minutes. i only caught one 2 pounder but had a few topwater hits when the gf called and ended my fun lol. sigh i kinda miss the single life, fishing all day and not a care in the world lol.

I actually shop at Wal-Mart so I really don't know what that means coming from me other than it is on the lower end for braids. Cheap.
For me that is. For you, it may be the shiznit, but have you tried PowerPro and actually feel SpiderWire is better? Like I said, my experience with SpiderWire is not a good one and I know others feel the same. It is proven though that PowerPro is a higher quality braid and that's what I go for.
Honestly SPARKY, I wouldn't change a thing your doing. It appears your having a great year so do what you do and keep tagging fat fish. No matter what the line. Really, all I need is a bambo stick and some string.

Next time i swing into sporthouse i will check out that braid,not saying im changing but i could rig up another rod:cheers:Im not stuck to much in my ways, if i were i'd still be throwing senkos for the greenies and thats all i would be doing#-o And it is because of this site alone that im actually not,met a good guy and teacher of alot of new things.

Sparky,..I also use Power Pro Braid on all my Bass Poles,..tried a few others but PP seems 2 work for me,..just got back from Mardon,..will post ASAP,..wasn't the best fishing but wasn't the worst,..had a great time!

My friend and I both switched to braid for one of our reels ... he purchased Spiderwire and I Power Pro. After one day of fishing he promptly went out to purchase PP for his reel. He ended up having so many problems with the Spiderwire with it not performing like expected both in the cast and retrieve. He cut more out because of birds nests than I think he did fishing. I only switched on my spinning reel as with my bait cast I am still in the "learning" process.

I believe that when Spider Wire came out it was better quality then it is now. I have a real spooled up with some that is old, bleached out due to use in salt water and fresh water, and yet still in excellent shape. I bought some Spider Wire Stealth recently at a place when I needed a quick replacement for another real just last winter, and it was removed soon after that trip. Oh well, it is not too uncommon for the bean counters to cut back on quality a bit when their sales are Strong.

As for Power Pro. yes, it is great line. It is on most of my bait casters and a couple of my spinning reels. It does seem to retain it's round shape better.

I have used Tuff Line for sturgeon, and it is OK, in larger diameter and higher pounds.

I have also used a Cabelas product that has a monofilament tracer woven in. It is really very good, wraps around the rod tips less, and so far quite durable. Still, ask me in another year - it is pricey enough I want to see how long it last.

As for rods, UL or other wise, I find the Ugly Stick to be a little lacking in sensitivity, not as good a caster as many comparable rods, but it is sure Strong. And quite frankly, you can't beat the price for a rod that strong.

Wal*Mart, hate shopping there because of the crowds, but quite frankly, they have kept prices down, and quality up, in every town they go to. Think about it, every sporting goods store wants to say that they have better quality than Wal*Mart, and yet you find the same items, yes the Ugly Sticks and the Power Pro, in Wal*Mart. Now, I wonder if I can get my wife to pick me some new Rapalas when she goes there next time?:-$

There are 2 versions of ugly stik now -- original and "lite". I agree that the original ugly stiks lacked sensitivity, but the "lite" version is pretty good. Don't let the name fool you, "lite" does not mean wimpy.
Of course ugly stiks are not in the same league as "premium" rods that cost an arm & a leg. But if you want rod that's reasonably sensitive & super-tough for less than $50, the ugly stik "lite" is a great option. (I bought all of mine on sale for about 30 bucks each-- sometimes less! :money:)

I have an Ugly Lite and it is AWESOME! Has perfect amount of give and sensitivity for <$50.
