Boatless in Spanaway

Post by Bisk1tSnGraV » Wed Aug 13, 2008 7:43 am

So since I am without a boat I primarly fish from the shore at both Alder and Spanaway Lake. But with all of that it seems that I have very limited or no success. I was taken out by a friend for my first bass fishing trip since I was a kid. That day I caught my largest bass ever, a 1 pound 15 ounce LMB. It may be considered a dink by some but that fish has gotten me excited about fishing. so with all of that said ... is there any advice for me on where to fish? Thanks for the help.

'course they don't have biscuits and gravy ... but if they did, I bet everyone would eat there.

Hey bro,..try Silver in Pierce,..it's close 2 you and if you tell me when you're going I might meet you there and take you out for some Bass. From what I hear they have new owners with some much needed repairs done 2 the dock and I hear you can still land some nice German Brwons in there,..I'm not sure but I don't think the lake is pressured 2 much for Bass. LMK.

Thanks BB,

I will look into Silver. I am happy I found this forum and look forward in at least seeing the fish you guys are catching. I'm always willing to learn if someone wants to take on a intern ... laughs.

Welcome aboard!!!
If you havn't already..might try Rocky Point at Alder Lake.It holds a nice population of smallmouth.
I'm currently looking for a bigger boat but often take my 12ft up to Tanwax,Trout and a few others.
If you don't mind boating with a psycho,I'll take you out.

Thanks for the offer Kevin. Well if you dont mind having two psychos on your boat I am game. Rocky point is just a little further up from Sunny Beach, isnt it?

I know the feeling. I went to PLU and myself and some friends would sneak off to spanaway every now and then. I think living in that area and not having much money to drive to other lakes is the main reason I turned to trout fishing the first 6 years I h ave lived here. I seen a couple reports of nice smallmouth and largemouths being pulled out of spanaway. I have a lil fiberglass boat that is kept out in parkland area and went out about a month and a half ago. I seen some nice largies on bed towards that lil cove you drive by to get to the boat house. I suggest walking that trail and getting in some good casts. Theres lots of structure and pads around there. If they are not there then give in front of the boat house a try with something top water. I seen a guy pull out a 4lber there with a top water lure but that was back before they weeded that whole area out. Then the other place you want to look is the far end of the lake. The best way to get there is to drive down military road take a left at the light thats past the park entrance then another left into where those neighborhoods are and walk down and find a gap between the properties that isn't private property so you don't get shot, shanked, or raped. I don't know the exact turn but if you drive down you'll see nicer house and then you'll know to make that left. And if you stick around I may turn you onto my secret lake but I'd suggest getting a float tube at least until the winter. It has good shore access but when I went it was overgrown and had maybe 2 ft to cast and still nailed a 2lber. Good luck and Trust me I feel your pain.

Woops almost forgot one more spot. Do you know how to get to that lil island stone bridge thing at spanaway?? You have to drive past the park and make I think the 2nd or 3rd left you'll go thru a neighborhood and it'll y off. you won't to go towards the left and then you'll drive across the bridge. Look to your left and you'll see a lil fence and a little dock. I think there used to be a house by that dock but no one really uses it but I launched my boat from there with no complaints. Most people are really friendly. But when I was there I seen a school of 1lb bass just moving around. There was about 25 of them just hiding in the pads. So if you aren't afraid to make left turns you should have some success..

RB ... thanks for the insight and tips for around Spanaway Lake. I will give them a shot for sure! It is a little better to have a little more to go on when heading out. I am in the process of searching for a float tube as well. I think it will give me at least a little more range on the places for me to fish. This does surely show the value of this site but allowing the quick access and communication between members. Thanks again for the help and I will keep you updated on my trials and hopefully successes.

No problem. I've been in your shoes and had gone YEARS without landing a bass, but then again I was fishing once every 3 months if that. But I appreciate all the help I get here and other places so I try to recipricate that to the best of my abilities.

I'm headed out of town for a few days but we can meet up sometime soon.
Rocky Point is located just a little more east of Sunny Beach on your way to the big city of Elbe

Thanks again Kevin. I had thought that was the location of Rocky Point. Let me know anytime you want a fishing partner. I just got back from a our first family camping trip. We were down around Randle ... with the high heat I think it all went well and no one completly melted down. So now I am looking forward to another trip with the family. Let me know anytime you want a fishing partner.
