Floating Worms

When i was at Potholes, i was trying to catch bluegill and crappie on the bottom in about 20 ft of water (for some reason they were down there) with these little 1 or 2 inch Berkley power nymphs. I had them tied about 3ft behind a few splitshots, and just bounced the split shot off the bottom really slow. I ended up catching about 15 8 inch smallies, and a nicer one, around 1.5 to 2 lbs. The nymphs float, but they down float strait up, and they dont sink to the bottom, they kinda stay in the same height as they were when the splitshot hit the bottom. If i get back to Potholes, or even when i go to Sammamish or Washington, id like to try this again, but specifically for smallies. Does anyone know of any plastics, like worms, or tubes that do that same type of floating thing?

You might as well just Drop Shot your worm JT and just make sure it stays away from your line so your presentation stays true,..a good Palomar knot and some lead for your weight and your in the house,..either hook your plastic weedless,..or wacky if your using a Senko for activity,..that way your bait stays in the fish zone,..I've never tried Dropshottin a Night-Crawler,..might be interesting,..maybe inflate the worm,..hhmmmm,.. ,..maybe worth a try,..I probly didn't help you with this reply JT but just my 2 cents,..BB

I remember back in the mid 90s they sold plastic worm with little air bubble looking things in them and they floated really easy. I am sure they sell plastics that float. Or you can buy an air injector thats made for night crawlers and try to inject some air pockets into your plastics. Not sure if that will mess with the movement of the bait but it will for sure make it float

Being diabetic and using syringes gives me a lil advantage.I use my needles for pushing air in a worm.Works great.At the end of the day I put them in my Sharps container.

So what your doing is called "split-shoting" .. it's a neat technic used for smallies , the cool part about this technique is that you can make so many different adjustments to your rig .. You can use a drop shot hook and drop shot baits with the the split shot .. you can also use it like a similar technique called "carolina rig ".. meaning that split-shoting is just a "finesse" version of the carolina rig ...

So yeah bud , keep experimenting with it using different plastics and weights ...Im proud to see you becoming such the versatile angler , keep it up ..

You will find that years down the road that alot of your self taught techniques is what will separate you from a lot of anglers ..

You should look at the Zoom Salty Trick Worms. They are floaters and would work just right for what you are looking to accomplish. Way to keep it up.

There are some plastic worms in the market that float. EZ Eggs brand plastic worms are floaters.

Worst case, just pin a corkie on the line above the hook.

For tubes, cut some styrofoam or plastic packing foam that will fit inside the tube. Thread the foam into your leader first (using a needle), and then slip the tube over your foam. Instead of foam, you can also use a string of 2-3 (or more) corkies, and then slide the tube over the corkies.

BB i didnt even think about a dropshot until you said that! If i don't find worms that work like i want, ill stick to the dropshot.

BBD, thanks for telling me what the method was called. I think theres a article on WL.com about split-shotting. Im gonna go check it out now.

And thats a great idea with the tubes Shad_Eating_Grin. That would kill on Potholes, and maybe even Sammamish!

I think im about order some of those Zoom Salty Trick Worms right now 2000subaru. The description on the site makes them sound perfect for what im trying to do!

I was urged by a salesman at Bass Pro Shops to buy the Roboworm floating worm. I tried on a c-rig but it didn't float...hook too heavy?

Were you using an Offset-Hook Travis? Might be a better presentation if you D-Shot the Robo.

Try using a smaller hook, I usually use 1/0 or 2/0 on Carolina rigs.
