Water Temps

What does everyone use to measure the water temps? Any cheap suggestions?

I used to use either a swimming pool thermometer or an aquarium thermometer.

At GI Joes they have a minnkota portable water temp meter. Its about $15. Its accurate, just don't get the main unit wet.

My depth finders have temp meters built in, but that would not be considered cheap.

I found a cheap way at a harbor freight, a dial shaped head with a push in metal probe. It cost about $2 and it works pretty well when I go Steelhead fishing.

Hand. Stick it in the water. If it turns blue, water to cold. If not not, water just right! Seriously though, I use a depth finder with a thermo gauge on it. Only problem is getting the deeper readings instead of surface temp. You might try the swimming pool thermo on cord to get deeper water temps.

I use my depth finder. The temp sensor is on the transducer.

I'm a float tuber too. I just wear swimming trunks. The water temp is either "warm", "chilly", or "I'm a friggin idiot".

Thats hilarious. You dont wear waders at all? Any minnows ever get up in there and inspect the goods?

Well, I'm gonna go to Fred Meyer, or Joes and try to get a cheap one that I can just dip in the water for thirty seconds or so. Gives me a reason to look at tackle too

I had knee replacement surgery last summer and my knee is still swollen twice as large as the good one. I can't bend that leg while wearing waders, puts too much pressure on the soft tissue and still hurts. Takes about a year to get over that surgery, so I'm still working on it.

Still, I'd rather be in shorts in the water. I grew up in Georgia where we'd wade through swamps to get to a good fishing hole, so I like being in the water. Reminds of simpler times.

And no, no minnows have inspected the goods. Spooked a few 8 pounders, though

Well, I bought a waterproof kind from Vicks that you use to measure sick kid temps lol. It has a small case, so I'm sure I wont break it too soon. It was only $6, so I'm good to go. My son tried it out. In 5 seconds it beeped in at 98.7, so maybe I dont have to wait all that long after all lol.

It might work but I've been a paramedic for several years,you bought a medical theromometer.These are not designed for temps below 85 degrees.If your core tempeture even drops to 90degrees,you are clinically dead.However,I'm not familiar with the one you purchased...so it might work. I hate to say it....but if you want quality,your going to have to spend more cash

There are some lakes around here that you don't want to walk around in while wearing shorts. Blackman's comes to mind.

Unfortunately, no. You were right. The thermometer just read "LO" when I put it in the lake. So much for the cheap route.
