RE:4 dollars a gallon...
we are going tarpon fishing on the keys down in florida, and, hopefully bag a bunch of redfish, too. we are going to charter 3 days, then go it alone 2 days. it is part of his reward for passing his k-9 certifications which he is currently studying and testing for over in tri-cities. i had another regular commuter counting them with me. get this- over 1/3 of them were not only by themselves, but, also flying down the hov lane at 70 mph. now, i realize that for some folks, it is the ONLY way they can get to work, but, i betcha at least half of those folks could have carpooled, used public transportation, biked, walked, etc. and the 1/3 could of at least obeyed the law concerning double occupancy lanes!!! it really opened my eyes about this oil crap!!!

I go 60mph all the time on I-405 and I-90. People consistently get mad and go around me at 70-75MPH. I drive a truck that only gets 17MPG, but I drive very little, so I'm ok with it. My truck is what holds my boat, without it, and I wouldn't fish. It's a Toyota Tacoma 2001...4WD comes in handy, too. I probably put 300 miles per month on my truck right now, but I am concerned of not only on our reliance on oil but also China, just look at the growth of China and their comorbid use of petroleum...the solution starts with us, but until any enforcment is placed on the private and public sector, we're going nowhere fast (no pun intended).michaelunbewust wrote:over 1/3 of them were not only by themselves, but, also flying down the hov lane at 70 mph. now, i realize that for some folks, it is the ONLY way they can get to work, but, i betcha at least half of those folks could have carpooled, used public transportation, biked, walked, etc. and the 1/3 could of at least obeyed the law concerning double occupancy lanes!!! it really opened my eyes about this oil crap!!!

300 miles per month WOW, I wish I could do that. I put 3,000+ miles on my truck since mid. January. I wish I got 17mpg too.kutthroatkilla wrote:I go 60mph all the time on I-405 and I-90. Haven't pumped gas in over 5 months...Definitely helps the pocket book when you don't have a car. I don't need one however...
300 milers per month is pretty darn good. I used to drive about 15,000 miles per year.

Yeah, I could see where that could be done, easily. It depends too on what you're doing. We're college students and are seasonal drivers and can also carpool with other students. However, I find 300-350 miles per month is about right for me, and I try to keep it below 500 miles per month at all costs. It does help your wallet as well as the global environment, however, I could see where someone could easily rack up 5,000 miles per month if they were recreation enthusaists to real estate appraisers. I know they'll come a time when my 300 miles/month is no longer "doable" and will have to log more miles...I do hope by then my vehicle will get better than 17MPG...more like 25-30MPG for a truck...although with a truck, 17MPG isn't all that bad. When I drive out to Beaver Lake and back I'm putting a good 50 miles on my truck, but I do try to limit this kind of travel as much as possible, and perhaps pick a fisherman/woman up along the way to save them the expense of fuel in meeting me at the lake (carpooling is overlooked...imo) and is a really great way to get around. I'm glad to only drive around 5,000 miles per year, but when it comes time for me to drive more (job, recreation, etc)., I do hope there will a better alternative that is not only cost effective, but also practical and attainable.Sam Kafelafish wrote:I used to drive about 15,000 miles per year.

Between a job, fishing over 80 days of the year, towing boats, going up to the mountains to ski a few times per winter, going to eastern washington once or twice a summer, school and back every day, and traveling up I-405 to Whidbey Island from Bellevue a few dozen times per year will do its toll on your mileage...kutthroatkilla wrote:Yeah, I could see where that could be done, easily. Lots of my family are real estate agents and some are in their cars quite a bit more then 15000 miles per year...

RE:4 dollars a gallon...
you are correct about the carpooling being overlooked.. even on my continous trips to potholes and the snake, i always try to do it with at least 2 others. 3-way split on the gas. saves a ton. gives me the extra cash for them expensive "waterdogs" when they come in season!! and, you aint kidding about china. my boss bought a sink company over outside of shanghai. being the shipping manager here in the states, i see thier expenditures on gas. they burn-it up. we sent 2 guys from our san dimas,ca branch over there, and, they cut the gas usage on 2 of the fleet trucks in half. was starting to wonder if they were just driving around in that packed-as-sardines traffic wasting time, while on the clock. over here we try and route our guys to save as much gas as possible. we are looking for a couple of smaller gas/saving trucks right now that get better gas milage.way to many people/vehicles there! i thought i read somewhere where they were closing fast on us, if not passed us as far as usage???

China has overtaken the United States as the world's biggest producer of carbon dioxide, the chief greenhouse gas, figures released today show.
The surprising announcement will increase anxiety about China's growing role in driving man-made global warming and will pile pressure onto world politicians to agree a new global agreement on climate change that includes the booming Chinese economy. China's emissions had not been expected to overtake those from the US, formerly the world's biggest polluter, for several years, although some reports predicted it could happen as early as next year.

Much of the Chinese pollution problem is that they are using the US model of development. We burnt coal, so now they are burning coal. They develop an industrial complex based on coal, which will require fuel oil to supplant it as their coal reserves deplete, just like ours did. Expect their path to be similar, but on a much greater scale.

I'm not trying to start up the previous discussion, but being from Denmark I felt the need to correct one issue. Littleriver said that Denmark has ruined it's nature with windmills and only derives 3% of the total energy consumption from windpower (old posts in this thread, yes I'm very very bored at work). That's just not true. Denmark currently get's 25% of it's energy from windpower, and expect this number to increase to 50% by 2025. Whether the landscape has been ruined it a matter of opinion, but most windmills these days are put up in windmill parks off shore, and you can barely see them unless it's a really clear day.

RE:4 dollars a gallon...
Got this in an email from Trent and I thought it was interesting to think about.
WHERE TO BUY AMERICAN GASOLINE. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW. READ ON.
Gas rationing in the 70's worked even though we grumbled about it. It might even have been good for us!
Are you aware that the Saudis are boycotting American products?
Shouldn't we return the favor? Can't we take control of our own destiny and let these giant o il importers know who REALLY generates their profits, their livings? How about leaving American Dollars in America and reduce the import/export deficit?
An appealing remedy might be to boycott their GAS. Every time you fill up your car you can avoid putting more money into the coffers of Saudi Arabia . Just purchase gas from companies that don't import their oil from the Saudis.
Nothing is more frustrating than the feeling that every time I fill up my tank, I'm sending my money to people who I get the impression want me, my family and my friends dead. Don't you think it might be of interest to know which oil companies import Middle Eastern oil and which do not?
These companies import Middle Eastern oil:
Shell................................... 205,742,000 barrels
Chevron/Texaco.................. 144,332,000 barrels
Exxon /Mobil....................... 130,082,000 barrels
Marathon/Speedway............ 117,740,000 barrels
Amoco................................ 62,231,000 barrels
And CITGO oil is imported from Venezuela by Dictator Hugo Chavez who hates America and openly avows our economic destruction! (We pay Chavez's regime nearly $10 Billion per year in oil revenues!)
The U.S. currently imports 5,517,000 barrels of crude oil per day from OPEC. If you do the math at $95 per barrel, that's over $524 million PER DAY ($191 BILLION per year!) handed over to OPEC, many of whose members are our confirmed enemies!!!!!
Here are some large companies that do not import Middle Eastern oil:
Sunoco....................... 0 barrels
Conoco........................ 0 barrels
Sinclair........................ 0 barrels
BP / Phillips................ 0 barrels
Hess. ....................... 0 barrels
ARC0....................... 0 barrels
Maverick...................... 0 barrels
Flying J. .................... 0 barrels
Valero.......................... 0 barrels
I AM GOING TO ADD THE FOLLOWING
Murphy Oil USA sold at Wal-Mart is from South Arkansas and owned USA
Not only that they give scholarships to all children in their town who finish high school and are legal US citizens.
All of this information is available from the U.S. Department of Energy and each company is required to state where they get their oil and how much they are importing.
But to have a real impact, we need to reach literally millions of gas buyers. With the help of the internet, it's really simple to do. Now, don't wimp out at this point....keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!
I'm sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send it to at only ten more (30 x 10 = 300)....and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000)....and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers!!!!!!!
If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it....THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE-the entire population of the United States of America !!!!
Again, all you have to do is forward this message to 10 people. How long would that really take you? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people, within one day all 300 MILLION people could theoretically be contacted during the next eight days!

Thanks fishnislife...I think I'll be taking my car to 76 stations more often, likely as much as possible. They are owned by ConocoPhillips, which are on that list of non middle east oil....

That is very intresting. I always fill up with Cheveron or Shell, dont really know why. But I am making the switch over to one of the other brands. The other brands arnt nearly as common, but I think I can make it work. Thanks for the heads up fishnislife
