Spring Tune-Ups
I finished my tune-ups on my reels last weekend. Glad that's over with. Every spring I partially dissasemble all my bass and musky reels, clean em. lube em and respool em. This is my second year on my braid on my musky reels so they all got new line for 2008. I'm ready if the weather ever breaks.

My tune ups included new seats in the boat and a new Trojan deep cycle for the electric, as well as making up a bunch of new bucktails. Looking to get out the 1st week in April if the weather cooperates! Mike.
RE:Spring Tune-Ups
My spring tune ups just put me in debt. I spent just shy of $300 on lures. Some crankbaits, bucktails and god knows what else. I'm seriously considering making homemade bucktails. Just not sure where to start.

Rollie and Helen's used to have a Bucktail kit for sale (I seriously considered buying it) but I can't find it any more. I've been playing around with this idea in my head as well, but am currently having a war of inertia. I just have so many inline spinners, I don't need any more for a while (except a few Vibrax, 5/6, but they're cheap).

Thanks for the links, very helpful. I'm seriousy going to start this project. I won't bet the farm that my homemade lures will be fish catching machines, but I'm sure gonna try.PDXFisher wrote:Get a kit!kevinb wrote:My spring tune ups just put me in debt. RE:Spring Tune-Ups
I spent the winter buying bargain lures on eBay to replace an entire box of rusty ones. Some idiot (yours truly) forgot to check the box for moisture after fishing in the rain the last day of last season! Fortunately it was just my smaller box of spinners/rooster tails and not my spendy rattlebaits/rapalas/etc.
I also just dropped $5k on a motor rebuild. My block developed a mysterious crack at the end of last season. No overheat, no winter ice-up the previous winter, just metal fatigue they say.
Well my wallet is pretty fatigued at the moment and I am ready to do some fishing!!!
P.S. Hey, DeadEye what on earth is that hog you're holding in your profile picture and where did you catch it? Man that thing is heeyooooj!

During the winter months, I spread out my tackle boxes in the bottom of my boat and leave the lids open so air can circulate. No rusted hooks, no rusted hook files or tools.
RE:Spring Tune-Ups
Sounds like a very smart idea, Don.

RE:Spring Tune-Ups
Generally during the off season I open my tackle boxes up every chance I had. Always wondering...what else can I fit in here..Sharpen hooks..wipe off the blades on the spinners. Old grubs, whatever...never really an off seasons any more. Did my tune up fishing last Saturday on Tapps...shoulder is sore..ahh sweet pain! And a sunburn... now I'm good to go ...See yah all on the water!

Hey TroutCowboy. Sorry to hear about your motor. I feel your pain. I had to re-power last year. Ouch, huh!TroutCowboy wrote:I spent the winter buying bargain lures on eBay to replace an entire box of rusty ones. The bass in the pic is a 9lb 11oz largemouth from secret lake #69. Released of course and also not caught off a bed like everyone does now days.
