Oh hell yeah. In fact, in some ways, I'd say it's easier. Fish that big twist and shake more than make long runs. If you're using big conventional gear, often the weight of the lure makes it far easier for them to throw it. They make a bigger hole and it works its way out. It's a lot tougher for the fish to throw a fly that weighs so little. Muskies aren't great fighters, a barracuda or tuna, tarpon, etc. put them to shame. Hell Chum Salmon blow Muskies and Pike away for fighting ability. You can land anything you want on a fly rod if your gear is heavy enough. I use a 9wt Winston BIIx with a Nautilus reel (awesome drag!) for all my Esox needs. I also have an 9wt Echo Classic for a backup rod that is plenty up to the task (and much cheaper).

If anyone wants to be really inspired to catch Pike on the fly, they should order In Pursuit of the Water Wolf, by Barry Reynolds. It came out on DVD in November. Netflix has it, and Fly Shack sells it online. Mine just came today and I watched it twice already. Most of it is from the Innoko River in Alaska, which I mentioned in another thread. I've been talking to Barry over email and he said there isn't even a close second place to the Innoko when it comes to big Pike in North America. 60 fish days with none under 40". I will bring my laptop to the Chapter 57 meeting so people can see a few minutes of it. I can't think of anything that would be more fun. Having seen decent sized Pike hit my fly like that, I can practically put myself there...but mine averaged about 18 inches less and 20lbs lighter.

You can see a few minutes of the DVD on his website: http://www.barryreynoldsflyfishing.com/

Click on "playlist" under the video screen and choose the Water Wolf one if it isn't already playing. Sooo much fun...

Which of the eastern Washington Tiger lakes have good water clarity and nice patches of shallows with weed lines? Ie; which one would a fly fisherman be able to expect the best success on? Additionally, who goes to these lakes and has an open boat seat? ;)

Rosann, this is a new adventure for several of us. We have been educating ourselves the best we can, basically articles on the internet. Until we get into the field and try some techniques, it is going to be mostly trial and error. We are always open to any information that someone offers. There are a couple of guys in the Spokane area that are well experienced in hunting Muskies. They have offered information that is great.

I and several of my fly casting friends are looking forward to starting. Spring is finally here, so it is coming up soon.

Holy Cats. That is SOME video. The only thing better than the music is the strikes and follows.
$35.00 lighter for me, too. LOL

And I don't even fly fish.

Yet.

My DVD arrived today. I just spent 68 minutes in a high adrenaline rush! This is the best fishing video that I have ever seen. It is fantastic. The production is top notch with exceptional video, great action, very informative and the background music is superb. A must have for anyone hunting the "Water Wolves".

Now, I am really pumped:compress: :bounce:

Glad you liked it! My Mastering Pike on the Fly book came today, so I'm reading it right now (I already had Barry's first Pike on the Fly book). Seems plenty detailed!

Also, my Pro Tactics: Muskie book arrived today and I already read it cover to cover. It's a great read as well. Rob Kimm's a really good guy and answers many questions on the fishingminnesota.com Muskie forum.

Time for you to hit the Pend O'Reille! I gotta go up there...

Oh yeah, I'll be there and I'll bring it. I'll bring all my Muskie DVDs. I'll also be bringing the new Muskie book. Either the Wild or the Stars game would make me plenty happy as well. I was a Winterhawk season ticket holder for many years until this past year (and a good thing, too). Always hated the Thunderchickens, of course.

I hope I don't lose points. I'm a diehard Canucks fan but they are out the of playoffs again. So my second team is the Calgary Flames.
