large mouth will be in super shallow water but deep water is were the "win" will come from. Shakey head and footballs last year.
RE:what improvements will you be making for 2008 ..
I would be at the first break, not shallow and not winter deep. Unless the weather gets cold then I'd go deeper.

I've just been watching this thread develop to see what everyone will be trying and working on this coming season. Personally, I have been thinking about this all off season and I'm glad BBD brought it up for everyone to start thinking about. Great topic man!
For me, my first thing will be to get out more and fish with BBD :thumright and others around WL.com. Last season I met so many new friends from this site that I am excited to get out and fish with some more of you fishn fools. Besides that my slogan for this year is: "Go Big or Go Home". I plan on throwing a lot of big baits this year because I was talked out of it last year. I decided too late into the season to go against what I was reading and was told and now I completely regret not pulling out big baits earlier in the season. Swimbaits all day (Huddlestons, SBT's, SPRO's) big jigs (1/2oz.+ with beefy trailers) and monster plastics (6" to 12"). Call me crazy, but I have a plan to tag big bass and I'm not going to deviate from that. I also am going to work on the dropshot with my Huddlebugs I picked up late last year. I have a gut feeling that this bait is going to be my secret weapon on the water. As far as techniques, I didn't crank enough last year and I picked up a killer fat crank by Strike King: Series 5 in Sexy Shad, and I am excited to try it. It will be a very hot bait. Other than that I plan to continue studying lakes inside and out and hopefully try out a bunch of new ones.
08' is the year for the BIG bass. Let's go get'em boys.

Good to see you and some of the other diehards still around. Everything has been great. I haven't talked to Jon at all. I'll give you a call in the next couple days to see how things have been.
As far as the tourney March 29th I would fish it but I'd need a backseat. Plus, I don't know how to catch those things called bass, so I don't think anyone would want me to fish with them.
Great thread BBD. Got this forum a little energized again. :thumleft:

Anyone care to school a newb redneck on what club membership entails? I've noticed more than a few of you mentioned joining bass clubs and it has sparked my interest. Also, how does the whole tournament scene work? Anything out there for those of us tourney rookies w/o real bass boats?

Redneck a good club in your area is www.westernbassclub.com, they are based out of the Renton area. For nearly every club you don't have to have a boat to join the club or fish the tourneys. The brass in the clubs will normally make sure everyone has a seat for each tourney. Go to their website and click on the "about the club" link. That will answer some of your questions.
When you think you know it all, its time to quit. Knowledge should be gained on every trip.

Definetly check out western bass club Redneck. I'm the Treasurer and I'll gladly take your membership money Jokes aside, you can come to our fish-in's and we almost guarantee a seat.
This year I would like to put down the drop shot and try other things. Feel like I got plenty of experience with it, looking for less dinks and more bigger fish. The swimbait rod is ready, still need a reel though.

Chris what rod did you pick out for swimbaits? I heard the Okuma SBR is a great rod for the money but a guy in my club has me leaning towards the loomis. If you need a reel that's going to hold lots of 20# line shimano made a new low profile curado that will hold as much as a "round" baitcaster.

RE:what improvements will you be making for 2008 ..
Hey Daniel. I also have read good things about the Okuma big bait series rod. I picked up a Quantum tour edition "swimbait special" on ebay for $109. I've yet to get into the catching portion of swimbait fishing, so I'm not too worried about my rod yet. It does feel right on the money though, 1/3 bend with alot of backbone. I am looking to buy a CTE-401 Calcutta. Are you talking about the 300 Curado ? I'm sure that will work, but I want a reel thats bulletproof so looking into the round style. Never used the round so hope I can get used to it. Got a little coin invested in the swimbait thing already, so looking to put some time into it this spring.

Nice. Sounds like you got a good game plan.
RE:what improvements will you be making for 2008 ..
I want to get out and fish some lakes I haven't been to before, like the Potholes. Other than that, I'm going to put my new GPS/sonar combo with the Navionics Hotmaps card to work this year. I'll also be throwing some bigger swimbaits. Got some really nice ones from Mattlures on Fishinislife's recommendation.

RE:what improvements will you be making for 2008 ..
This is going to be a tough year for me. I learned a lot (a ton) fishing the drop shot and caught a lot of smallmouth and largemouth, and from the shore to boot with it. As a matter of fact, the DS accounted for 100% of the smallies (lost one on a crankbait) and about 70% of the largemouth.
I will be putting that rig away and apply the same approach to learn:
1) The Jig and Pig - I am still a jig-n-pig virgin. Although I've worked it a number of times, I have come to conclude that unlike pitching a DS rig to a dock or other shorebound location, JNP seems to be more placement dependent (ie, more close quarter combat vs. megacasting from the shore) for success than the techniques I have had success with. The targets I want to hit always seem "just out of reach" or casting distance and it irks me. I could be wrong but those are my initial impressions.
2) Shakey head - Oh boy.. I think I am going to like this one.
3) Spinner and Buzzbaits - Once again a virgin here, but I can nail fish with an inline spinner. Go figure!
Give me a crankbait, the drop shot or a senko, but if my life depended on catching a fish to save my life on 1 and 3, I'd be pushing daisies.
Other major goal: Help my son and daughter to catch their first bass.

I have read others on the web, but none described it quite as well as this.

A nice bass is too valuable a resource to enjoy catching only once.
