Puget Sound Chinook 2014

Post by kodacachers » Tue Jul 15, 2014 4:26 pm

Good luck with Chinook tomorrow in Area 9. I'm all geared up but blew the outdrive last night. Boo Hoo!
Hopefully the season will still be open by the time my boat's fixed.

Our boat is due back from the shop tomorrow - cant wait to get out!

Anyone done any C&R up that way? We will likely start out at Possession.

Ive heard from some friends that mid channel has been good, havent seem goos results south of point no point. I will be out sat morning running up to port ludlow area then workign out way back to elliot bay. Area 11 seems to have slowed down and hopefully the recent rain has been bringing some new fish down the inlet

So I'm finally getting back on the water this weekend. I'm launching out of Everett, and wondering if I should I stick around Possession or spend the time to motor up to Pilot Point/skunk bay/mid channel. Last reports I've seen have had Chinook improving at Pilot Point but am wondering if its enough better than possession to justify the time.
Appreciate the advice!

Unless you have heard otherwise, don't bother with Mid Channel Bank. Fished it the 27th and the 28th and it was a bust. Saw two fish caught and one had to go back as it was too small. I think most of the fish currently being picked up in the Sound are resident fish, hopefully the main run shows up soon.

Thought id throw this out there in case anyone was wondering. Took the inlaws crabbing yesterday out of Shilshole. Came in about 5pm and the fish checker said he had about 60 boats and 20 fish come in.
I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

I wonder where they were fishing. 60/20 isn't a bad ratio compared to recent creel reports. I posted my report--goosegg out of Pilot Point and didn't see a net in the water in the 4 hrs I was out. Maybe we'll have Chinook and Coho come in at the same time this year?!?!

The fish are certainly there. Hate to drop a "shoulda been there yesterday" but PnP area was really great since last Wednesday and all through the weekend.

I'll be back out Thu and Fri.

Good luck!

There tomorrow. Prob fish east side of Possession until low slack and switch over to Pilot on the incoming. Now that I've moored my boat at Everett and don't have to mess with taking it out of my garage, launching etc should be able to hit the wtr earlier.

Hi Matt, just curious were you mooching or trolling? I was out Sunday 8-noon at Pilot Point and then rounded PNP without a strike (though probably half the time dragging around shakers that my rod watchers didn't notice) and didn't see any nets in the water.

We are trollers. The bite was early, around 630-730 we got 3 then and picked up our last one about 930 and bounced.

Not good this AM. I got to the east side of Possession abut 5:30 with the intent to fish there a bit and head for Pilot. Unfortunately the wind decided otherwise and real soon it blowing 20 or more and 3 foot chop like you see on Possession a lot. Fished the east side until it just got too rough and headed over to Browns Bay which was protected more or less. Pretty soon 4 other refugee boats came over and we all trolled down past the Shipwreck and I quit around 10:30. No reason to file a report. I got 3 doggies, 2 shakers and a flounder.

Tuesday sucked. But I went out yesterday and did better. Filed this report:

On Thurs, got to Pilot Pt around 6:30, last part of the outgoing tide. By myself, just one rod. Prob 10-12 boats at Pilot. Marked some fish but not very many. Trolled Flasher/Coho Killer and also tried a green squid with salted herring fillet. Moved into deeper water and tried trolling a 5" Tomic, fast and at 120-140 feet, and worked it through tide change..nothing. After low slack I changed back to a flasher with Irish Cream Kingfisher spoon. That worked, about an 2 hours after low slack I nailed a 15 pound male 85 feet on the DR and 105 FOW. Pilot is usually best on the incoming. Didn't see any other nets. Nice day.

We were over there yesterday in the fog as well. Boated 2 keepers, lost a 3rd. Big fish was upper teens around 17 or so.

Most guys are doing pretty poor. I'm happy I got one! Sunday fishchecker report at Everett showed 269 rods, 16 Chinook.

We fished Sunday as well and it was lights out for us. Boated 6, released 2 unmarked adults, lost 2 others. Back to the ramp by 12:00 noon.

Hard to believe we had 25% of the recorded catch out of Everett!
