super laggy, pages are timing out

Post by oneshot » Thu May 30, 2013 8:28 am

hey guys,
did a host switch happen or something?
half the time i click submit on messages, posts and the likes the pages time out trying to load.. I've been making a habit of copying my posts so i don't lose it in the time outs..

whats up?
anything we can do to remedy? or is it just a major traffic spike with the season changes?

p.s. timed out twice trying to post this

I noticed this days ago... and thought it was something on my end because I was using 99% of my bandwidth for something else. I have not seen it in days though and have zero idea how to go about tracking the problem down unless I experience it again. Have any ideas?

I'm not sure but its been pretty reproducible on my end for some time now. nothing in my house to slow down my bandwidth either.. I have xfintity internet.. even when nothing else is running on my laptop, pages just time out a bunch.
would be nice to narrow it down if it is just my setup some how..

There is a bunch of stuff happening on our server that I honestly don't understand... so I've put in a request for help to our host provider. Tons of Audit Failures in our security log, lots of them pointing to some kind of Packet Filtering and packets being dropped/refused/blocked. Something like that could/would cause time-outs on clients, I think.

It's the tool that most folks at the evil empire use for debugging and network issues with web pages..... SharePoint.... But what is SharePoint, nothing but a fancy website.

I took a look at it but it was unclear as to whether it gets installed on my PC, where I'm having no problems, or on the server...

The way I've seen it used is to have it installed on your machine and then point it at the web page and capture away. It's not really in my area, I'm more of a Netmon or Wirteshark guy as I just monitor and keep the servers healthy, App specific problems go to another team but there is a bit of back and forth. I'm back to work on Fri night and I'll ask around about any other ways to deploy it. I do know the other guys also use it between the front ends, app servers and SQL's.

HAHAHA.. but i'm not at work!!! good ol fiddler.. fiddler can run in the background and see's any http request.. some might not know this, not only websites but a ton of applications make http requests to do a number of things, check licenses, updates, versions, etc.. some good, some not..

i'll install tomorrow and see if i can spot the failures..

(timed out posting this.. ugh!)

Sorry oneshot.. I'd totally do this myself if it was still happening on my end.

It also sounds like things were a bit different for me. I would click a button to Approve a fishing report and it would hang... just keep spinning forever. So I would close out the tab and when I tried to go back in to approve the report again it wouldn't load at all. The forum never had a problem for me, just the .NET side of things, and it was always in Chrome. Hopefully you see something as I'd really like to get to the bottom of the issue.

Hey, no worries, Aaron!
i'll try and figure it out..

the fact that no one else has chimed in on this problem too means it must be something on my end?

Someone else beat you to the punch day before yesterday but they ended up posting it to the end of the Spammer thread instead of making a new topic... so no, you're not the only one. And where ONE person posts about a problem I'm sure there are thousands that are experiencing the same thing but dont bother to ask for help.

That was me last night and I did start a new thread titled "web site keeps freezing up".... It took several attempts to post and it's beyond me how it ended up under "spammer"!
My issue is every time I visit Wa Lakes to read a report or post this site freezes up and I can't go back and have to close out. This started 7-10 days ago and is still happening this evening. I have had zero issues anywhere else on the internet, it's isolated to Wa Lakes only. Best of luck finding the issue.

Ha!! Isn't that the way it always works! I'm on an old 32bit box running win 7 with IE10. I have some other issues but none that compare to hanging and timing out. The only annoying one is the back button doesn't work, it gets hung up on the ad-click. I think some of the guys on our App team run fiddler as a proxy in front of our FE arrays but only for long enough to grab some data. It kind of cramps the performance when you bottle neck in front of the F5.

Can you expand on this? What are you referring to when you say "ad-click"?

I am using Win 7 x64 and Chrome. It started for me this last weekend but only lasted a day or two before going away.

I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of it. I think I'll go add a banner to the top of the site letting others know we are working on it.
