Oh, yeah... there's probably a few better rivers to fish. Late october, some nice big fish enter the river though.

Well if the dungy picks up next week, i'll tell you. As for today, it was slow. Fished up at the hatchery and saw hardly any fish. Moved to the lower and i caught a few dollies, and my grandpa caught a huge chum. Bright(for a chum) Looked like it was around 20lbs or so. Supposed to get a good amount of rain for a few days, after that when the river starts dropping it should be pretty good fishing. Would be a waste of time to go out here till next week, though there are a few fish being caught early morning.

Yeah, it really does. Haha they can be pretty fun. Few years ago there were more chum than coho. We fly-fished with light tackle, and caught so many big chum. Few had to be well over 20lbs.

So after taking a break, checked out the river today. Didn't fish much, saw a few fish moving up from the lower. Gonna fish it early tomorrow. Should be some good fishing all through this week. Anyone gonna fish it?

So fishing seems to be picking up. Got to the river today, around 7Am. Saw one guy leaving with a bright coho when i was walking in. He just left the huge skeins of eggs laying on the otherside of the river...Why?! Anyway, kind of dissapointed from seeing that. Started fishing, didn't get much and lost a few set-ups. Also a guy downriver from me was really ripping at the fish, so i left. Beilive he caught one fish. Moved up river after that, and one guy already had a big(15lbs or so) dark coho on the bank. Watched him snag and kill 2 more fish, while i was just starting to fish. Won't get into that though..SO my grandpa ended up landing a somewhat dark buck, but it was pretty big and it had pretty decent meat. Weighed in at 12lbs, being his biggest coho so far, and biggest fish other than chums. I ended up landing a dark buck, i gave it away since someone else wanted it, and i didn't. So it should just get better and better till the end of october. Saw a good amount of fish in the spot i was fishing.

What else? Pearl pink corkie and baby pink yarn. They're really agressive towards pink on the dungeness.

Haha, i've tried soo many other things and only pink corkie and yarn seems to work for me. Gonna take a break from fishing the river most likely. Thinking about heading out to the sol duc soon.

I would be very happy! You shoulda walked right up to him and ask if he's gonna keep the eggs. That's how I usually get my eggs since all the fish are gay. HA!

Haha, thing is...I couldn't get to the otherside of the river...I would've gone over and grabbed the eggs if i could have. I've noticed this year, theres been way too many bucks. Out of all the dungeness fish i've seen hooked or landed, maybe 5 were hens...Annoying, cause all my roe is cured up for coho..I need eggs for steelhead!

The logic fishermen use when thinking about eggs is very odd.

Steelhead will bite just about anything. Eggs are good for them, but there are a lot of other baits/lures that can be effective, including the plain old corky and yarn.

Using eggs to fish for salmon, on the other hand, is often the most effective way and sometimes absolutely necessary to catch them.

Yet, fisherman use the reverse logic: they use corky/yarn for salmon so as to catch hens for eggs, with the intent that they will later use those salmon eggs for steelhead.

I mostly like having the option to use eggs when steelhead fishing, in case something else doesn't work. As far as salmon go, i catch almost all my coho on eggs, but...The dungeness fish refuse to bite eggs for some reason. I have plenty of eggs for salmon, but i use a different cure for steelhead and have yet to cure any for steelhead.

I love jigs for steelhead, 1/16th ounce being my favorite size. But i also like using eggs for steelhead. I have enough eggs for salmon right now.

why don't coho cured eggs work for steelhead, had the most sulfited oily scentiest eggs anyone could ever cure intended for springers on the cow and I even had 17lb test with a 2/0 hook and a huge bobber and 2nd cast a nice 10lb summer run swallowed my eggs deep.
