+100 braid is awesome stuff . mayby i play hooky/screw work and join yo guys i need yo guys to teach me skok ill bring some eggschu7498 wrote:Like what everyone says. braid is great for drifting, you can watch your line cause it floats. just always use a mono that has less strength so you won't be breaking off your braid, but breaking off your leader. otherwise people will be getting mad when they snag your braid in the river. I use 20lb braid and 12lb fluoro, it works great! I will be out early on the corner hole off Purdy. see you guys out there!

Re: Skok-chat
nothing cares as much as people say, i did an experiment once and used high vis bright green leader on a school of steelhead and caught a dozen, when they stopped biting i switched to flouro and only one more bit. The hungry ones all ate on the high vis, they didnt care, it was CRYSTAL clear. So if steelhead dont care, then kings, coho they dont either. flouro only helps in very particular situations with very picky fish, hell i caught a springer, the pickiest of all salmon, that had a high vis leader and hook down its throatdonater wrote:dont think kings care about seeing line, they must be the dumber species of salmon.

Re: Skok-chat
kings are smarter than them, but by no means effected by leader. their either totally uninterested or are going to smash your eggs either way. Now chum... theres a classy salmon, and pinks? ohh baby them are hard to catch. Nope, and one of the reasons it was designed too. The kids at the Skok will give you crap for using it. But like I told them last weekend at the Skok, "it's not my fault you keep casting over my line". And guess what, after they lost 3 or 4 set ups to my braid.....they decided to develop a casting order and everything ran smooth after that and their gear was safe Not only that, but you have a small river with lots of people and lots of cover. The quicker you can get the beast in, the better for everyone. Just drop down to 15-17# leader. No sense in using the same main line as leader. There are lots of snags there, sooooo when u get hung up you will save your lead and only have to tie on a new leader as opposed to a WHOLE new set up. Might have to change your knots with braid, I like the palomar when braid fishing.

gonna be out bright and early fishing with a bead. hopefully its good fishing since the natives are not netting tonight. see you guys there. btw i decided to go with 20 lb izor and 20 lb izor leader. just so i can power the fish in a little bit more, debating between my spinning rod or level wind, im not that good with my level wind and if its combat fishing, i might wanna be able to cast so im thinking spinning reel.

Fishing eggs under a float for kings - done it but not to much success as of yet. Planning to change that this weekend.
Question: roll em in borax & put em out the night before to toughen up a bit or fish em sloppy/gooey (I've seen both recommended by one "expert" or another.) ?
On one hand I don't want to run out, but on the other I would rather blow through them and catch fish than have a bunch left over at the end of the day but NO fish...

Under a float I like my eggs wet. Fish down low away from all the snaggers.
Re: Skok-chat
I'm with fishenfreak and what you are feeling Nate is your line in the fishes mouth not your bead. A classic lining technique. Keep at it you'll get it.natetreat wrote:I am gonna have to disagree with you there freak. I've watched them come out from cover and grab my beads, just like a steelhead does. The trick is that you have to find bitey fish. Even on the Skok, I've pulled my bead out from the gills of a big buck pushing 20 right out from under the combat line. You'll see them jump out of the school to nail it as you reel in. They work well for the price. Pluys you don't get smelly hands! But I'm throwing eggs out there when the crowd clears up to good success too.fishenfreak wrote:kings rarely even bite corkies, let alone a tiny bead especially at the skok, its mostly flossing even if you arent trying, only way to be sure is float eggs. they arent steelhead, they arent looking for food like single eggs and such

Hey gringo, u goin to the skok right? Leave um wet. Its small enough for shorter casts and ur float fishing. Wet is always better for getting takes but simply cannot be done when making long casts or when side drifting because long cast and bottom hangups will rip um right off. Kings love a juicy egg, go wet at the skok

Re: Skok-chat
Thanks! Next question, I am bringing a float rig and a spinner/spoon rig. Any reason NOT to try spinners & spoons? I've hooked kings in the Green with spoons, so I figure why not.

Re: Skok-chat
go for it. finish the hole you are baitfishing with hardware most of the time this will agitate a strike. you'll either get bit on the first few casts or none at all. if you keep pounding hardware you will spook the fish that are in the hole with that much lead and flash. comes down to presentation. good luck.Gringo Pescador wrote:Thanks! That's my usual routine, run bait until I'm convinced it is fruitless, throw a spoon or spinner a few times and then move on..R.Ton wrote:go for it. finish the hole you are baitfishing with hardware most of the time this will agitate a strike. you'll either get bit on the first few casts or none at all. if you keep pounding hardware you will spook the fish that are in the hole with that much lead and flash. comes down to presentation. good luck.Gringo Pescador wrote:Thanks! Re: Skok-chat
+1 i fished eggs for 2 hours on the springer opener on the cascade in early morning. Hooked 5. Once it died, i put a spoon on, nailed a nice fish second cast, then no more

Re: Skok-chat
okay who ever said salmon do not bite beads obviously do not use them and makes inaccurate judges because they are jealous, I mainly just catch coho, chum, and pinks with beads and I have had times where mrod is basically being pulled out of my hands. 8mm red bead, black yarn, 3ft leader, with a #2 hook slays coho in the quilcene, dewatto, skok, cascade, and where ever else I fish for coho. I have seen coho litterally watch the bead pass them and then all of a sudden turn downstream to hit the bead. I have heard stories of people out trout fishing with beads and end up catching salmon with them.
PS went 5 for 14 on the skok today, eggs ruled today for me mainly drifted but missed a couple bobber downs unfortunately and solid hits.

Re: Skok-chat
I didnt say salmon, i said chinook. Coho and pinks take beads a lot but most of the time on, and let me emphasize this part, On rivers like the skok, a bead caught chinook is a flossed chinook. Now on non-meat fisheries(snaggeries) they are more likely to actually strike a single bead, although again, like i said big chinook really do not do the bead thing. Trust me bonker im not "jealous". Ive thrown more lines at chinook and other salmon than u can imagineBrat Bonker wrote:okay who ever said salmon do not bite beads obviously do not use them and makes inaccurate judges because they are jealous, I mainly just catch coho, chum, and pinks with beads and I have had times where mrod is basically being pulled out of my hands. 8mm red bead, black yarn, 3ft leader, with a #2 hook slays coho in the quilcene, dewatto, skok, cascade, and where ever else I fish for coho.
