Adding Scents to Powerbait

Post by huma » Tue May 08, 2012 10:36 am

I know powerbait nuggets are impregnated with scent, but I was wondering if anyone has had success adding extra scent/attractant for trout? Do you use extra scents or do you leave the nuggets as-is?

Let’s see, adding scent to scent. OK sure, why not....

Powerbait is like crack for trout. Why would you need to change it? If a fish sees it, they'll eat it. I don't see how it could hurt putting extra scent on it, but I would bet it would be more expensive.

Ive seen people do it and I have done it myself. I cant say for sure that it helps but it made me feel better when I was getting bites when it was slow. If your not getting bites on power nuggets on a recently stocked lake, then you need to change your leader length or change locations.

I've also seen people do it with good success, but, like return said, not sure if it helps but if it adds confidence don't hesitate to do it. I myself don't fish powerbait (never had any luck with it) unless I add some worm too.

I do it all the time; especially when fishing PowerEggs. Yes, I do think it makes a BIG difference. I've seen the trout show a preference on different days to one scent or the other. The gels seem to stay the best; with crawfish, shrimp and garlic being some of my favorites.

With normal Powerbait, I don't add additional scents. I have been adding anise to Powereggs with decent success.

I have often felt that power eggs lost their scent relatively quickly, but are of value in certain situations for their color, texture and initial scent. I have recently started adding a small ball of power bait to a string of 3-4 eggs, to keep some scent around the bait. Adding a liquid scent, however, might be a better strategy in some cases, such as when the powerbait is selectively eaten or frequent casting, where power bait might fly off.

i dont still/bottom fish often .... but a lil power bait and eggs combo is what i use if i'm not use'n a worm ... i'll use liquid scents for pre scenting baits but only gel baits if i'm adding scent while fish'n ... bottom fish'n for trout i find the white power eggs work best for me .. and a lil smear of shrimp smelly jelly .....

a lil story ... was fish'n at 'ol "Stoney Creek" and used up my eggs .. the 1s i had from a few days earlier wernt look'n too good or last'n very long on the hook ... sooo i start dig'n through the tackle ... i spy's a jar of power eggs ... hmmm i says to myself ... hooked the 3rd 1 in the string leave'n lil dangleys ... skip'd a couple put the hook through another 1 ... added a red 1 skip'd a couple more white 1s 'n hook'd the next ... left a couple dangle'n .... by sorta twist'n 'em together while push'n 'em down the hook into a wad i made a lil cluster ... used the tip of my knife 'n stuck a lil dab of shrimp smelly jelly in the middle of my wad/cluster ... 2nd cast fish on .. got my limit ... in fact put the last punch on my punchcard (ok i'm old) .. 'n i'm outta there ... thing was when i took the hook out i noticed the bait was ok .. a lil torn up but coulda mess'd around and got it re hook'd and it still had jelly on it lolol ... them eggs are tough .. i've caught a limit of trout only use'n a few .. and cheap sob that i am ... i've been known to take 'em off the hook 'n put 'em bk in the jar !!! .... As I said before, adding scent to scent... PB is nothing more than moldable scent. I think the location a nd depth is more important than the flavor du jour. Trout are stupid and will eat just about anything when it's put in front of them. I personally prefer lures to goop. More fun catching and you can be selective.

Has anyone tried these? I have not have to add scent just another "gulp" egg with it?
