Well, since I anit a football fan and it was to beautiful of a day to sit at home, I decided to go down to the river and try a little Pike fishing off the bank. It's a tuff walk into were you can fish and it took me about 20 mins. to hike in.
Finally got to my spot at about 1 pm and got out on a rock and started casting a 7" Rainbow trout colored swimbait. After about 20 casts I hook into a fish, it feels like a good one but not a monster. I get out my video camera and try to record it, bad Idea almost dropped my camera in the water. after a short battle I get the fish close enough to see. It's a toothy critter all right just not what I was looking for. As it turned out to be a big toothy Brown Trout, about 23" long and maybe 4 to 4 1/2 pounds. That was a first for me to catch a trout on a 7" swimbait. I got it unhooked finally as it had rolled in the line and it was a tangled up mess and took this quick shot before putting it back in the water. This is second big chrome colored Brown I have got out of the P.O.

By 3 pm the sun had gone behind the hill and it was starting to get cold so I hiked back out.

Here is my brown. That's the 7" smimbait I hook it on and my big pliers.


As it turned out in my poor attempt to video what I thought was a nice pike and almost dropping my camera when I did finally start filming the fish I had the camera upside down. LOL Made for an interesting video.

Heading to the river tomorrow for hopefully some Pike action....

Chad Landrum of "Go Fish Charters" and I were on the river today for about 5 hours as were quite a few other people. Saw 4 other boats besides us and all had no fish and no bites. Ran into Nick & Jeff who had been up north and fished all the way to Riverbend this morning with no bites so they came down to fish in my honey hole, but I was already there catching squat. Not sure what was up but the fish were not in the spots I normally find them this time of year and what fish we did mark were not biting. We fished from the Bridge at Oldtown down to Sandy point in all my best holes and got Nada. Water temps were from 38 Deg. to as high as 45 in some of the shallower waters, but it held no fish there. We did find fish (that I think were Pike) in an big eddy with a current faster then you would think Pike would hold in. The arches were big, so I believe they were pike in about 9 to 12 feet of water and in a kinda fast current (faster then most people walk). That's not the norm for this time of year as they like slow or no current for the most part. So even though it was a beautiful day on the river the fishing sucked. We even tried for some smallmouth but they weren't bitin either.

So if you go out Craig hope you see more action then we found today. I hope to get out on Lake CDA tomorrow for some Pike Action.

I didn't get go out on Lake CDA. The guy I was going with thought it was too windy for his boat on that big of lake. And as hard as it was blowing up here it was probably a wise move. So how did you do on the river?

I will just say, if you didn't fish the POR on Friday, you missed a banner day.

How can I describe it? The weather was OUTSTANDING, and the fish were HUNGRY!

All the fish we caught, and there were plenty of them, ended with the same result as what you see in the attached photo.
My new creedo is this. "Catch and Release Baby! Weather they like it or not"

We fished the river today and yesterday. Yesterday they were deffinetly biting better than today. I think this cold front is messing them up. We did get 7 today and missed atleast 12 more. Fished the Indian Island area today fish are stacking up around there.

Good to hear the Pike are starting to slowly get a little more aggressive! Hopefully here in the next few weeks things will start to get even better. This makes me very excited to see what April has in store, once those water temps reach about 44 to 45 that is usually a key turn on temp for Northern Pike and hopefully if everything lines up those temps should be right about that come April. Plus I have some more fishing memories to make with the Great Fishermen and Women of the Pend Oreille River, heck in a way it almost feels like going back home up in the Northwoods of Hayward Wisconsin! Of course it is a little bit colder in that part of the country right now, but Spring is right around the corner!

Oh and just to let everyone know, breaking news... The Prince of Pike came in 3rd Place at the New Mexico / Colorado Pike Tourney today! He got into a 37.5 incher, a 33 incher and a 28 incher. Picture and Video coming soon, He told me He would get them posted and out to everyone in the near future! So CONGRATS on a banner day, now I just need to know what the secret was.

Hey Mark, don't feel sorry for me just invite me to go with you next time!!!!!!! ) Were all the fish you got Fri. small? That one you released looks about like a 26" or so, no big fish? I take it you put in at Cusick? What type of baits were you using? Were you deadbaiting or throwin lures? We tried both the day we went out and you know it's a slow day they won't even hit a deadbait.

You dont need to deadbait to catch Pike this time of year. Seems like most guys that deadbait catch one or two. We can go out and double and triple that out put by casting lures. I dont like the idea of hooking a big fish deep with a treble hook which is used in a dead bait rig. Just my opinion....

It kind of sounds like you're trying to pin me down as to where I launched, where I was fishing, what bait or lure I used, and how big the fish were.

Do you want me to put you in my boat, drive you to the spot, tie one of my lures on for you, cast it out and hand you the rod? LOL OK I'm just kidding. The fish are out there and they are feeding. We launched at Cusick and went south. The fish were hitting X Raps and they were in mainly 6 to 9 feet of water in the main river. Water temps were 36 to 41 degrees. The most effective method was to cast the lure up stream. They seemed to be laying there with their noses pointed up stream. That's how we got most of our bites and they were taking the bait HEAD FIRST nearly every time.
