Basses sence of smell!

Post by the1fishingpro » Tue Sep 25, 2007 9:42 pm

Is it really true that Bass can smell a bait better than a dog? I heard Bill Dance say that They did. Thats a weird thought.

What do you guys think?

That is kind of weird though? If that ends up being true then Im going to start using scented baits and see if I get more strikes. Have you been using any scented baits at all and if you have what kind do you think it is better?

Well i have tried Anise oil on my jigs and lures, but no difference. I was thinking that the scent is mainly supposed to be in the bait, so that if the bass bites it, the scent will squirt in its mouth and make the bass hold the jig longer in its mouth. But the way Bill Dance said it, u could throw a lure out and a bass on the other side of the lake could smell it and swim over super fast.

I know that Sharks can smell blood super good, but bass? I just dont know!

well if you have had no success with scented baits then I guess I wont try it because we pretty much fish at the same spots anyway. Maybe there is some other type of scent that would be better then anus oil.

I dont know, but i dont think scents work that well anyway, why would a fish bite something that it doesnt usually eat? What is your favorite Plastic to use for bass? maybe if you injected it will anise or something it might hold your lure longer, but maybe it will make the bass not want to bite it. Who knows until u try right?

many people swear by them, and many people dont use them at all. its personal preference really.

hunger, aggrevation, reaction or curiousity. take your pick.

There is a book out there titled "knowing bass" It will educate any reader and scratch through the cloud of speculation.

The reason oil based scents would be less reliable than water based scents (if you're intent is to attract them via having utilize their sense of smell) is because a bass can only smell things that are water soluble. This does not mean that they won't strike lures laced with oil based attractants, because they will. They just cannot smell it.

A bass' sense of smell is quite good in its watery environment, but they have other senses they utilize to help them hunt. Smell is just a slice of the whole pizza.

Here is the scoop about this book:

Knowing Bass
Keith A. Jones, PhD
ISBN: 1-59228-616-X
ISBN: 1-58574-523-5 paperback

IB’s note: A Scientific Approach to Catching more bass. It is a wonder how few bass anglers have taken the effort to read or find books like this. Their loss. After all, speculation can only go so far and Lord knows I love to speculate. This book dispels a few myths bass anglers hold true. Want to know which ones? Read the book!!

I bought mine at the Borders or Barnes at South Center (across from the Best Buy). They should be in stock there for just about $17. It can be yours for about the price of a lucky craft. :bounce:

What would be the point? If you ever had a serious question, who would respond to your posts? You may have killed your credibility already with alot of the guys on this site by "crying wolf."

Oh boy, I'm sorry Lyndon, but I just laughed my a$$ off when I read your above named scent. Is that a home brew scent you got there, or is someone messing with you - anus oil? :geek:

When I saw that 4 letter word beginning with "A", I figured it was misspelled and ignored it.

Make point to self: Ignore future posts from certain members. Joke or not, if you are here to learn so be it. If you wish to make an Ass, I mean Anus of yourself, proceed by all means. I am certain the Anise oil, I mean anus oil you have on hand would not be in short supply. :-"

There might be stuff I would like to learn sometimes, but from this point on, I know pretty much everything I wish to know about bass. Plus im not the only person with questions, its not like I cant read other peoples questions lol. You guys act as if Im a bad guy or something haha, well u can get over it and start talking about fishing again. If it makes you feel any better, I Apoligize! But i dont see how most of you will except that.

Note.....they really need to make a chat room, so that fisherman can have a real conversation instead of messages. Does this website have one already?

Oh by the way, if im such a jerk, why would I even have told you about the thread? I would have let it keep going and going. and it would have been a mess!

Sorry again

My point is that I would most likely be less inclined to respond to your posts.

I am not mad nor am I upset at you fishingpro, contrary to what you think. I also do not take umbrage to your antics. You can act however you see fit. I could really care less and I imagine you are in that same boat with me on that (i.e., you could care less what others think of you) in how you act here or any other forum.

I don't know you and you do not know me but I am sure it would a good deal to go fishing with you some time.

I am relatively new to fishing and because you know a lot about bass fishing, I wouldn't mind learning from someone who knows more than I.

Peace.
