RE:WATCH THIS VIDEO.. THIS IS WHAT COULD SAVE OUR FISHERIES
You should contact WDFW and ask them if they have considered a program like this. If you get a response on the subject, post it for our readers.

i just sent a email to them. i will post the reply.

Gotta say after watching the video this might work at least for hatchery stocks.........the wild fish still need 100% protection:cheers:

RE:WATCH THIS VIDEO.. THIS IS WHAT COULD SAVE OUR FISHERIES
If our state would do something like this, I have no doubt fishermen would approve of an increase in licence fees. But instead, they waste time and money in emergency sessions to declare removal of projects. Does no one in Olympia understand???
RE:WATCH THIS VIDEO.. THIS IS WHAT COULD SAVE OUR FISHERIES
Of course they don't understand, they are POLITITIONS, not sportsmen. All they care about is their OWN personal pocketbook, and how they can take money from the people.

Interesting stuff Curado - yes definitely post up their reply!
I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

I don't understand why you feel we need to do this in WA? It would cost so much money to duplicate what is in Oregon and available to WA. It is international research. All countries form the pacific rim go there.

Absolutely correct Toni. Although this is an innovative approach to salmonid research, the cost of the infrastructure for this facility had to be quite high. Considering WDFW's current budge shortfalls and the fact that the agency has been cut to bits, it is unlikely that WA could afford to build such a facility and we are fortunate to be so close to this one and have it at out immediate disposal. They said several times throughout the video that people are traveling from all over to visit THIS specific facility. The information collected here will be shared globally, and could provide some major breakthroughs in biological salmonid studies. Until more is known about operating such a program building more of the facilities is costly and may not serve much purpose. This is a really cool concept though and is very exciting to see. I can't wait to see what types of things we have to learn from this type of research, mimicking the natural environment.Toni wrote:I don't understand why you feel we need to do this in WA? They already are, pretty sure it sounded clear in the video. Chances are the research done down there will NOT be down by DFW but private interests, consulting firms, and tribal governments.

The Puyallup Tribe has already made a hatchery at Clarks creek that is more like a true environment than the hatcheries of the WDFW.

Quite honestly the tribes are and have been running salmon fisheries for years now. DFW pales in comparison to their efforts.

I agree. I wonder if part of it isn't that WDFW does it same ol' same ol". Whereas the Indians have used new ways of doing things. They also have the infulx of money to help them.Matt wrote:Quite honestly the tribes are and have been running salmon fisheries for years now. DFW pales in comparison to their efforts.

RE:WATCH THIS VIDEO.. THIS IS WHAT COULD SAVE OUR FISHERIES
A little bit away from the point here but this is what Ive been saying about the puyallup tribe. They take care of this river more then anyone and then soo many people give crap about it. I dont think people even stop and realize how many fish they put into the river system. Then get mad that they net the fish.
More fish please!
RE:WATCH THIS VIDEO.. THIS IS WHAT COULD SAVE OUR FISHERIES
I think the anger towards the netting is more centralized on the fact that gillnetting and rivers just do not mix. Gill nets impart 100% mortality on anything that gets hung up in the net, native or otherwise. They have the right to harvest, but they need to make sure to manage the resource appropriately by imparting proper harvest techniques. I.e. tribal commercial fishing in rivers HAS TO shift to selective harvest practices if we expect to see any rebound in native stocks. They DO help a ton by adding hatchery stock to the ecosystem making those fish available to sporties for harvest, but what they achieve in harvest potential is lost in the damage they do to the native stocks.
