what am i doing wrong

Ok so im reaching out to all you seasoned fishermen.since season started aug 1st I have been fishing like crazy, mostly the puyallup, witch i know is slow, but i have been up to the skok a few times also, and i have yet to even hook up, it is frustrating when you see every one around you hooking into fish and i cant seem to hook into one, my set up is this... three-way swivel, four feet of leader, size 14 corkie size 1/0 hook, black or purple yarn, with about a 1/2 oz lead weight, I know most the people on the skok are snagging there fish, and i dont really want to do it that way but i figure i should have at least hooked up by now, i just baught a new st croix pole and i need to break it in, HELP!!

I know everyone gonna jump me for saying this but I dont care. Use 8ft or more leader. The skok is way too clear. Longer leader is needed. If you are worried bout snagging because you have a long leader dont. They are snagging them with short leaders too. Longer leaders are more of a shot in the mouth.

well if you hope to catch one in the mouth on the skok youll have to compromise the ammount of fish hooked, and float eggs under a float. If you want to hookup like others you see, copy their setup which is most likely a bigger hook, with no corky and around 8' or more leader. This will get you more hookups, and youll have to weed through the fish until you get a "legal catch". Colored yarn and corkys floated their way are going to spook them unless scented, in which case if they are in the mood will bite. If you want more youll have to sneak up on them with a small piece of black or brown yarn just to keep hook up off bottom.

In the Puyallup I wouldn't worry too much about the long leader (flossing). Look at the water most of the season. Unless you are useing sent of some sort the fish can't see behond the end of their nose to know you have an offering out there for them. Long leader or short most fish are flossed on the Puyallup.

i've been down to the skok alot this year, mostly by hunters farm an because the water's so clear i just use some black yarn on a 1/0 hook with some sort of stink on it (usually egg, krill, or squid) an have gotten quite a few in the mouth and a bunch just outside on the jaw. i don't think the corky helps down there unless you are fishin incoming or slack tide. Flinginpooh's right you have to go with a longer leader or the fish won't bite drift gear.

That isn't exactly true, most of the time you get a bunch of fish in a slot and no matter what length your leader is when that happens you can get snagged into a fish just reeling in.

yea i was down by hunters farms yesterday, and i joined all the people fishin off the log jam, i could see where all the fish were and i would drift my rig right infront of them, but my corkie and yarn would just go over them every time,, maybe im not useing enough weight?

Also, try drifting eggs under a bobber at the mouth-end of the stream. It's usually too slow for anyone to drift so it'll weed out the snaggers so you can have room to fish.

I was at the skok yesterday. There was very few fresh fish coming in. Got some boots though.

ya, i went up by the mouth of the skok first and was checkin out some sweet spots and ran into all the old timmers floating eggs in the slows, that is my kind of fishing, they were just kickin back drinkin brew bs'n, i didnt have the right geer with me, @ tnj8222, haha, tony, small world, its kenny, get ahold of me next time you want to go to the puyallup, im takin talan down there tomarrow to see if we can get into some chinooki, gonna plunk eggs,

Personally, you will have a better catch ratio using bobber/bait or hardware. You won't ever hear, "Is it in the mouth?" fishing this way.

Definitely try Blue Fox spinners in size 3 or 4. Hot pink body or Chartreuse with Silver blade. Another lure for Coho is plugs. I watched a guy Saturday get a Silver tossing a Fire Tiger plug. I could see it in the water and next thing I see is a bright silver flash and hearing him yell, "Fish!" It was awesome.

Okay for those of you that have toosed plugs from the banks. Is there a certain way to do this? How do you set up your line, leaders? I have always wanted to try this but just don't see how your plug is going to stay there. doe s it jsut drift or is it like plunking?

It's just like tossing plugs to bass. Same concept. These early fish are aggressive and will chase it down. They will chase it all the way to the bank, so don't give up on your retrieve.

the skok fly is about a 6/0 or 7/0 treble hook with some pencil lead wrapped around the shank. if you watch what the natives are throwin when they on their side snaggin you see it from time to time (it's illegal for them to use trebles tho).
i assume the pencil lead is for color, cause everbody knows kings love lead gray lol

Are you sure about the trebles? I think they can use whatever technique they choose?
