The good & the bad of this year bassfishing :

Post by Bigbass Dez » Thu Aug 26, 2010 9:50 am

Alright guys the premise of this thread is too talk about your very best day and also your worst day thus far this year . I want to hear about some jaw dropping experiences ! I want to hear about the fish that made you smile for week ! I also want to hear about the goofs ,mistakes , break-offs , bad days etc ... lets hear about it !!

The Good :
My most exciting day on lake took place down in Montana back early this spring ,when it was announced that i made the National team that was a moment i will never forget the rest of my life [thumbup] !!

The Bad :
July on Riffe Lake this year , as we blasted off that morning for the TBF Qualifers the net in our boat flew off about half way down the lake . Well with no net all day we had no choice but too hand land all of our catch the entire day , My first 2 smallies (2lb range) both jumped out of my hand and back into lake .
I also had a 5lb LMB come unbutton right at the boat this day about an hour before weigh-in . I had no ideal that my 3 fish in the livewell was good enough too cash a check , sucky part is the burning thoughts of how much more $ i could have earned had i landed all my fish#-o ..lol

Worst;

broke off a 5 pounder at the Taps picnic after it got wrapped under a dock, twice.

Lost a 4 or 5 pounder on another lake a week ago, after it went under the boat and broke off.

Lost way too many fish this year. Both good fish and small fish.

Best;

none.

edit: oh, ok, I acually caught some fish on a dropshot, up to 2 pounds and some ounces. That one jumped REAL good. I'll have to keep trying the dropshot now. :) And yes last month I lost a BIG fish on the dropshot when it came unbuttoned. oh well :-)

I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

Good: I tied my PB Largie @ 5.0 twice.
Bad: Broke off way too many using 8# flor on the dropshot fishing way to close to the lily pads and pilings.

Tall Tale of the year: I have fished one particular lake many times this year. At this one particular spot I have experienced the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat over a three week period. The location is near the front end of a large group of pilings and the spot i cast too is a quick drop off of about 1-2' deeper. The first time i hook up on this spot it feels like a good solid 4# fish but it gets me wrapped around the pilings and breaks off. On my next visit to the lake, I cast my drop shot at that same spot and I am hooked up again with a solid 4# fish. I manage to get it out of the pilings and as i am getting ready to swoop it into the net it comes off. The Owner drop shot hook I was using straightened out now I am 0-2 what what I think is the same fish. They say the third time is the charm, well they are right. I landed that fish on my third outing and it weighed in at just over 4#. I have since been broken off in the pilings one other time and have caught that 4# once more since then. Final tally 2 for 5.

Is bass fishing over already?
Look for Wannafish A Lure on FaceBook
He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

This can change because it isn't over for me yet.

Best - You'd think it was the pig I caught earlier this season, but no. That was sweet, but it doesn't even come close to taking seniors fishing twice this year. I'm taking them out again next month to Kapowsin. I've never been to this lake so throw in the tips and pointers for fishing from the shore.

Good - making a minnow bait from scratch and having it hook into 3 bass on its first outing. Went 2 for 3 because of the excitement and adrenaline

Wort - Not fishing enough or taking my kids as much as I'd like, because they not wanting to go as much. :(

I too am not done huntin' those hawgs but as far as the season up until now:

Good: caught my first decent bass since before I joined the Navy (8 yrs ago). Caught my first bass in my boat since I bought it last year, and showed a couple new fisherman the ropes and got to watch them catch their first fish in my boat. Can't beat the smiles on their faces!

Bad: Broke three rods, all within two weeks on the same stretch of lakeshore...grr. Lost a nice looking LMB boatside on American Lake that still haunts me as I haven't been able to nail into another one yet on that lake!

Hopefully I'll have more 'good' before the year is up!

So far this year these are some of my highlights ...

Good

Got Nathan (R0cky23) onto his first bass (1#2oz)
New LMB PB, 5#1oz
New SMB PB, 4#5oz
Bed fishing for first time
Caught fish on frog for first time
First year with new boat
Great trips out with BassMasterDerek and Sparky in which I always learn something new while I shake off that rookie tag ... LOL.

Bad

Honestly I wouldn’t say bad because it is all a new learning experience. But the one thing that has haunted me on lost fish is fail or poor hooksets. Just applying pressure and reeling does not get the big ones to the boat. Looking back as my 2nd full year as a bass fisher I would say that it hasn’t been good … it has been awesome. Oh and did I mention I finally caught a 5 pound bass?
'course they don't have biscuits and gravy ... but if they did, I bet everyone would eat there.

Good:
Fished a couple club tournaments, and got my first Big Fish trophy in a club T.
8lb LM on a 8" Huddleston swimbait 6.5lb LM on a 8" Huddleston (Same evening)
7lb 5oz LM
5lb 6oz LM
6lb 8oz LM
6lb 12oz LM
New Float Tube PB: 3 lb something LM, didn't record it in my log.
First Night Fish Bass for me: 2lb 15 oz

Yesterday: 6lb 9oz LM, and 6 fish total for 26 lbs, best 5 went 23-5. Gotta love a week vacation off work !!

Bad:
-Compared to last year, I haven't nearly got out as much.
-Lost fish !!!
-The possible state record fish I was chasing last year I think is Dead. Half a dozen trips and I haven't seen it= Many wasted days I could of been catching "something" elsewhere.
-Lake Washington SM fishing, I have been on it only a couple times this year and I am totally lost :pale:

hard to identify a 'bad'. I went fishless on quite a few trips, and it was probably because I kept doing the same thing in the same places expecting different results (definition of insanity?)

best of the year has been fishing with new people in various places. Like the day I went out with Tom on Sawyer. He has a great boat and a lot of experience. I learned a lot about the lake and bass, and caught a nice 3lb+ smb.

also, boated 50+ fish in the 1lb range one day at conconully. I always look forward to that trip. I start out on the dinks then move deeper and catcher bigger ones as the trip lags on. it's always fun.

Good:

Fished my first club tournament and placed third with the big fish of the tournament.
Learned new spots on Banks and Potholes

Bad:

Was only less than a pound from 1st in first club tournament
Not going out as much
Keep buying new rods and gear...when is it ever going to stop!!!
Only 1 fish over 5lbs this year

Year aint over yet, so this might all change...hopefully for the better. [-o<
