Just a thought here. What if a series of electrofishing outings by WDFG were to happen? Could we determine a better idea of how many Pike are in Newman? What if during the electrofishing WDFG kept all Pike would that possibly avoid killing off the lake? I'm sure they could inlist help Chapter 57 & 60 to make that happen. Something to think about.

Ok everyone the numbers are very small right now. Hopefully its the same fish that was caught and released earlier in the year, looks about the same size. Mark Divons from WDFW set out gill nets last Wed, i think he said they put out 6 nets. They checked them the next day and didnt catch any Pike, a great sign. We as fishermen and women need to just keep in mind that if we catch a Pike out of there that we keep it and call WDFW. Mark wants anyone who catchs one out of there to call them and they will come pick it up. I dont think the numbers are that big I know I've put in alot of hours on that lake this year and haven't caught a single one. At this point its about educating people about the diffrence in Pike and Tiger Muskies and what they look like. The Tigers have a distinctive tiger stripeing and dots on them and are more of a brown/gold color. The Pike on the other hand has segments that go side to side and are more of a green color. Remember Tigers have to be 50" to keep so dont retain the wrong fish please. If anyone has questions about the diffrences please contact Chapter 60 Mountain Muskies or Chapter 57. Thanks

Also just to add to Mr. Dowdy's post. There is a "know the difference" sign posted at the launch on Newman Lake. It was still there according to a friend who fished it last week. It has a 2 fish photo with a Pike and a Tiger on it. Also states that are not any Pike planted in that particular lake. There also is a sign posted on the bulletin board at Silver Lake. So again fisherpersons..Know the Difference please. Thanks

If you can't make it for the fun I'd be glad to bring you back some well filleted Pike. My daughter (flyfish'n Maddy) and I will be traveling over to flip a fly at those nasty pike of the Pend Orielle River.
I really want to hit this fishery! One of these years...

Mike, get in touch with Craig if you want to fish the Pend Orielle - he knows it like the back of his hand.

There is a Sticky Note on this Muskie Forum, 2nd one down, that has a job aid in knowing the difference between pike and muskie.
It can also be found here:

http://nwtigermuskies.org/files/2006KTDPostr.pdf

That was all put together by Cabela's, Muskies, Inc. and Gander Mt. back in 1986. It was copyrighted, especially the artwork by Virg Beck (see his signature in details). Always like to give the credit to the author of the artwork; they get little pay and even less recognition.

Tiger Muskies are sterile.

Another good way to prepare Pike is to pickle them. We did this a lot back in Minnesota. It is kind of like fresh water Herring!...It's a Norsk thing... LOL! Eat them...there will be more:chef:
