Topwater Behavior?
Hey guys, so I have caught my fair share of topwater fish but I don't know too much about it. I just cast and reel or twitch it, simple.
I have used a buzzbait, frog, and skitterpops etc.
Is there any special technique in the retrieval?
I have not thrown topwater on the westside of the mountains that often but had a weird experience this morning.
The reason for my question is, this morning I was casting a Norman crank that dives 4-6 ft. (floating model) into about 3 ft of water, i always let them sit in shallower water until the ripples are gone as well as with topwater lures.
Before i started to reel, a fish swiped at the floating crank and missed, i twitched it, popped back up to the surface and the same thing happened. I reeled it in with no bite.
I tied on a skitterpop same color with nothing for 5 mins.
So, I tie that same crank on again and did the same thing and they were hammering it, little dinks but oh well.
Has anyone else had something weird like this happen before and is anyone willing to share tips on topwater lures that might help me catch more fish?
thanks in advance!
Im headed to East Wa this week until Friday and am hoping to catch some topwater fish there!

RE:Topwater Behavior?
What color were the 2 lures? If one was a color on the belly that blended in with the clouds, then the fish might not have been able to see it. Did they both sit level when floating? Or did one sit with a tail down atitude?

I know a Guy that swears by doing this with shallow diving cranks at silver lake. Work's it like a Popper. if no hits then fish the rest with the crankbait bouncing off the bottom.

I see, they were a shad (what I would call it) color, silver, but the popper did sit its tailside somewhat submerged so that could be the deal?
RE:Topwater Behavior?
by the way AMX, did you have any luck out there that day?
RE:Topwater Behavior?
What day was that? I'm old, I can't remember what I had for breakfast yesterday. I had oatmeal today after getting home from the lake.
