Go To Lure
Just curious what everyone`s go to lure and color is. If your on any body of water any where. I know for some guy`s this is a hard one. I`m addicted to a couple lures and need to start exploring other options and I think this will help. Let`s hear em.

Believe it or not .The ole plastic worm with weedless hooks.I cast onto the dock or beach and slowly drop it in the water. BAM.
When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.

If I told you, I think it'd give away where exactly I'm at in my personal game.
At this point, spinners and cranks are my first choice when I don't know the water or the pattern. If I'm just not feeling it, I go to the worm.
Now I'm not one to be content with something if it's not working as well as I think it should. My #1 is usually my scout bait of choice. I suspect that things are a quickly changing for me.

RE:Go To Lure
Threads like this always makes me shake my head !! The #1 lure for bassfishing on a giving body of water is "Whatever catchs the most and biggest bass that day" PERIOD!
The theory that "one" bait will always get it done over any other bait simply means that you have created a "crutch bait " within your skillset .
Please Dont take this the wrong way folks , i am not bashing anyone here on this thread by any means at all , Im simply just stating that if you get to the point in bassfishing that one bait is a standard go to bait when all others have failed , you as the angler have reach the peak of your learning curve in regards to the lake and the fish that swim in there .
The pattern that i have witness over many years of bassfishing and fishing with others is that anglers will get too the point that they "want" to catch a bass with a certain bait regardless if other baits are more effective .
There has been many of times on a giving lake when im fishing a particuler bait for hours upon hours and not getting many bites on it , thats so tuff too do because its boring ,repetitive , and requires lots of time commitment in between bites . The end result is that "once" i get a bite and make a great hookset i "know" that its the fish iv been fishing for and all of sudden in one split second im soo filled with excitment, relief, and satifaction that alllll my hard work finally paid off ..
Too answer the posed question of whats my go bait , I can only answer you after i get off the lake !!!

Never thought about it like that Dez makes plenty of sense. I`ve had lot`s of day`s like you just stated. Guess it`s because I`ve caught more fish with one lure/bait thenthe other ones and tend to stick with it. Time to leave them at home.

Whenever i pre fish a lake prior to a tourney , I always start out with atleast 7-9 different rods rigged up with different baits ! My mission during practice is too get it down to 3-4 rods or baits for that lake , Now within those 3-4 different applications you better believe that one them is for "Hawgs" and the remaining are for #'s ..
Im looking to catch 5 keepers and for the rest of day im down to one rod to cull out as many of them as possible .. Every bluemoon (rare), i have been able to get rig of all my keepers with quality fish and now the only a bass over 4lbs would help the cause (Good Lord , thats always a great day on the lake) lol NOW WHAT DO I THROW .. haha

Good insights... just not sure it really addresses the topic starter's question. I thought the question was what lure we like to go to... not what lure we think is the best over all on any body of water at any time of year. Your answer is obvious. =d>](*,)Bigbass Dez wrote:Threads like this always makes me shake my head !! I think there are some baits you don't like and some you do. There are some baits you fish better than most other people. Some baits require intangibles that only some people possess. I agree with your overall point and just don't want your point to squash the question... because I think regardless of the results, we may have certain go to lures we fish that we might not fish under tournament pressure. Some lures are just fun and have their place in our tackle box.

A rapala DT-4 fished shallow. Colors are bleeding shiner and hot mustard usually.
RE:Go To Lure
Great topic
My pick would be the Rapala X-Rap,their really doesn't seem to be a wrong way to work it.
Straight retrieve, twitches, pauses and so on. Seems to work well for both bronzies and bucketmouths.

RE:Go To Lure
I'm gonna call you ZS from now on BMD,..HaHa,..although while I was on the water with BMD his Zara Spook caught quite a few Bass,..various sizes 2,..no "go 2" for me,..just keep tieing on and seeing what works then stay with it till it dies then on 2 the next bait. If I could pick a bait that I know would catch Bass when all else fails I'd love it 2 be a SwimBait cause I love 2 throw them!bassmasterderek wrote:Gotta use what is catchin em! RE:Go To Lure
For myself it boils down to LOCATION- and what "calendar period" and what "stage" is the lake in and where are fish holding. Deep, shallow, grasslines, pads and slop, docks, wood, I use the best lure for the given situation- there are so many variables but for the different zones sure I have favorites, they've been proven to catch bass when the bass are in those particular locations. Using best lure for given "location", based on how aggresive or mood of the fish. One variable on aggresiveness and location is vertical or horizontal presentation?
Recently I caught numbers of 4 and 5 pound smallmouth {that where in the 6 foot zone and active} throwing a f-11 floating rapala and ripping and jerking the bait. The fish buzzed me a couple times so I knew they where pissy and I picked a lure that I felt could trigger some bites. Turned out to be a fantastic day, with lots of quality fish landed. Sure I could have picked a number of different lures instead, the point is, your lure must match both the location and the fishes mood.
This is the cool thing about fishing, figuring out what the fish are doing and what they want, and if they don't want it, make them want to kill it!
