Marc.. I think that's supposed to be Citizen Kane...
not a bad movie....... and probably Orson Wells first and
last hurrah in tinseltown.. his career languished after that one big movie..
which didn't do all that well in regard to box office when it was first released
but it has been a regular on television late night movie schedules for over half a century...
did you ever figure out what "rosebud" meant???

You are correct. As the story goes, Wells supposedly made that film about William Randolph Hearst, although he always denied it. Hearst with his money and power, blacklisted him in Hollywood, so Orson went back to England and performed on the stage. Marvelous man.littleriver wrote:Marc.. Rosebud was the name of Kane's sled that he was playing on when they took him from his childhood home. It is in the last scene of the movie burning in the furnace. Kane died with the snow globe in his hand, with his last word being Rosebud. The way that I interpreted the theme was that with all his money, he always wanted to go back to his childhood to the happier times........correct?
The movie was also the first to have short and long focus in one shot. A break through in those days.
I briefly spoke with Orson Wells one afternoon in front of LAX. He was sitting in a Chrysler 300 (black) and was wearing a black suit. I knew he was a large man, but seeing him in person was to be believed. He was huge! He spoke in a very gentleman like manner and was very polite. That was the time period when he was doing the wine commercials. Can't remember the brand.

RE:Top 5 favorite movies.
Here's a couple of interesting notes for those who liked the movie "Gladiator"...
I watched most of it on one of the movie channels last night...
In the scene where Maximus enters the roman colliseum for the first time
he and his gang are required to stage a bloody reenactment of the battle of Zama..
This battle pitted two of the greatest generals (Hannibal and Scipio) of the time (roughly 200BC) against
each other on the Plains of Zama in Northern Africa... The timeframe of the movie Gladiator was 170 or 180 AD
so this kind of reenactment would be the replaying and celebrating of an event (some 4 centuries after it occurred) of great historical significance to this particular culture and it would make sense....
All the references used by the actors to describe the battle are accurate except the battle
itself is referred to as the battle of Carthage....... The stuff about carthaginians using mercenaries
to fight their battles is true as well...
contrast this to a scene early in the movie "Patton".... in this scene Patton instructs his driver to
wander off course for a short time to visit an ancient battlefield and he describes how 300 carthaginians
fought to the death to defend their homeland against a huge invading roman army........
The real "Patton" undoubtedly knew to correct history and context of this battle but he was long gone by the time
they made the movie and the producers apparently didn't feel a compelling need for historical accuracy at that particular
point in the making of the movie....
Carthaginians were traders not soldiers and they used their wealth to buy mercenaries to protect them.. they never fought their own wars.... A few top officers in the military were carthaginian (i.e. Hannibal) but that was it......
The battle of Zama put an end to the second Punic war and left carthage pretty much entact, except that the citizens there were now required to pay taxes to the romans and become part of the empire.... can't remember if they had to take on status as a Suzerain but this was probably part of the deal also...
The second Punic War started with Hannibal boldly moving all his elephants across the Alps (everyone remembers this story) and
attacking what is now Italy from the North... It should be noted that Hannibal took more spare change with him than he did soldiers and was constantly hiring mercenaries from within italy to serve in his armies as he campaigned up and down the Italian boot for 17 years.......... This same kind of thing happened to the Romans about a century later when spartacus organized a slave rebellion that really, really annoyed this very proud people...
The stage was set for the battle of Zama when Hannibal won a particularly bloody battle against the roman legions at a location not too far from Rome....... This battle resulted in huge loss of life to roman armies and because of it Roman leadership finally decided it had had enough and ordered Scipio to take an expeditionary force over to northern africa (Carthage) for to make the carthaginians think that they were getting ready to stage an attack on the Main business centers of Carthage..... Once Scipio was in place the leaership in Carthage became alarmed and called Hannibal home to protect their interests.... It was after returning home with his army, about 1/3 which was seasoned soldiers, about 1/3 limited experience soldiers, and 1/3rd raw recruits that he marched to fight Scipio on the Plains of Zama......
The battle of Zama was a very even match in terms of men and military hardware it waged for quite some time but, according to the accounts I have read, Scipio won the day by using a new tactic to deal with hannibal's elephants and because Hannibal was overconfident in the capabilities of his fresh recruits who he placed in the field behind his limited experience soldiers who formed the front ranks of the phalanx's....
Hannibal would typically start out a battle like this by just sending his elephants to charge the enemy front line.. purpose was to disorganize the soldiers and allow his main forces to deal with broken and unorganized groups rather than a fully rectangular phalanx.... Scipio foiled this strategy by teaching his legions a new trick.... When the elephants charged the legions reformed their phalanxes into "columns" that allowed room for the elephants to run through... the elephants just ran right down the columns causing no damage and once past the legions Scipio sent his entire cavalry out to harrass and disorganize the elephant
squadrons so they couldn't re-engage......this tactic left Hannibal in a situation where he had to fight head to head with fully organized legions....... Actually the death toll in this battle wasn't that high. It was more of a shoving match than a sword fight but ultimately hannibal was forced to retreat and send out emmissaries to cut the terms of a peace treaty....

RE:Top 5 favorite movies.
there are way too many movies that I love. However, I'll give this a try.
Snatch
The Departed
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The Man from Snowy River
Conspiracy Theory.
TCB, I like Jason Statham too, but I thought Crank was horrible. I was very disappointed in that movie.

This seems stupid to all you guys besides dbaker, but Monty Python and the Holy Grail has got to be the greatest.
