Hope he pulls through.
He's very lucky,in the fact that they were already in port and not out at sea.

That boat eating, the stress, smoking, ............ it'll kill ya fast. That's why I quit about 20 years ago.

I fished 2 summers up there. 1 on a troller, and the 2nd on a seiner. Also did 1 winter tour on a crabber. Great money for a college kid but the experiences gained were enough to get me to pound the books and figure out another way to make a career. Great people in the industry but it can be tough dangerous work. It's the last frontier and the people involved live life to its fullest (as well as burning the candle from both ends and the middle). Hopefully all turns out well for the captain.

How sad, my thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends and his crew. His death will be felt widespread.

Thats tragic. As a fan of the show, I will miss him and his emotional out-bursts. I hope the Discovery channel honors him with a memorial episode. The dynamic of Deadliest Catch will never be the same.

RIP Capt Phil

Just read the news. The show won't be the same without him.

I feel sorry for the kids too, 53 is young.

Deadliest Catch fans are very sad today for sure. Just about everywhere you go or look in any sports forum his memory is mentioned. He had a big impact on many people in a very short time. Seems to me like a pretty cool guy from the show. You could tell he loved his family. But his addictions ran his life and he has paid for it. I hope his family stays strong and the business will continue. The show will miss him for sure.
I wonder if they were filming when the initial stroke happened?

Had the privelege of meeting Phil on board the boat two summers ago. He will truly be missed by MANY. Great man, great family and great sense of humor.

In his memory, I have added our pic together as my avatar. He was a friend!

Even autographed my wife's shirt! NOT while she was wearing it though:)

Smokum, I would guess- a couple "cold ones"! It's hard to lose a friend, your lucky to have known him. Cool picture, wish you
well during this hard time.

Yea, watched it last night. They played a few reruns back to back. Got caught off guard when they switched to his boat and he was BSing to the camera. Just wasnt expecting it. Those guys have grit, no doubt about it!

New season begins on April 13 and they WILL remember Phil in an appropriate way.

I watched the Marathon over the weekend and Niki and I were so saddened knowing that he is gone. It was surreal at times watching him on screen and knowing he's not here any longer.

All of those crewmen and Masters we've met define the words tough, gritty, man's man and more. Very few of us could last two days on that job, let alone a 48-hour grind in hurricane winds and waves. Don't know how they do it.

None of us can really call ourselves boat-skippers after watching REAL boat drivers make their way thru the crap known as the Bering Sea in January.

One of the skippers once said "hell is not hot, Hell is the Bering Sea in Winter"

Amen to that.

I love deadliest catch but can only take so much of it. My family is filled with commercial fisherman, i run a bristol bay salmon boat, dad is a king and opilio captain my brother works with my dad, uncle is captain on a longliner, other uncle is a seiner, grandfather owned a fleet of trawlers and longliners, but after watching 'best of season _' (whatever number last season was). The incident with the wizard captain almost severely injuring his whole crew I didnt get it. First of all he didnt need to go out crabbing, they have a quota and 3.5 months to fill it, He had forcasts of 50 knot westerly winds, no need to not wait a couple days. But I understand, early bird gets the worm, he wanted his pots down first so go through the big seas( the wizard is the biggest boat, i believe 175 feet)He still should have taken less pots. The tarps are used all the time especially when there is freezing spray, why didnt they put the tarp on in port or as there leaving dutch. Im kind of ranting, I enjoy the show, its great entertainment, while I do watch the show, and I understand they are making some entertainment, that could have cost 2 or 3 men there lives. I also do understand that it was a doubled-up wave but it was just a dumb risky move in my opinion, anyone else see this episode or have any feelings on what im talking about?
