Our stick now isn't as big as it was back then. New technology and all is great, but manpower is too low and not enough equipment in numbers. Look what happened in the Korean War, and Vietnam War. The POLITITIONS told the military how to fight, and where to stop. You can't do that if you want to REALLY win a war.

And so now we are in between a rock and a hard place. China is an ally with N. Korea. A majority of our manufacturing is done in China. What happens if that relationship goes south? Then what?:-k

It's not like China is sitting back waiting for us to repay them on an IOU basis. Since the 80's they have been buying a lot of our debt in the form of T-Bills primarily for several reasons. They get interest on the bills they buy and the purchase of large amounts of T-Bills keeps their currency from rising against the US dollar. Essentially it helps keep Chinese goods less expensive and keeps the trade imbalance going because it makes their goods cheaper in the trade market with us so it keeps the US coming back to buy these cheap goods instead of manufacturing them within our country.

They aren't waiting for us to pay them back. Paying them for our exports isn't related to paying them back for T-Bills.

And they don't buy from us. We buy wayyyy more from them than they buy from us. We have a considerable trade deficit with them, all due to the cost of labor being significantly cheaper and fewer laws/restrictions in terms of environmental laws and manufacturing operations. They can make cheaper consumer goods than we can. That is why almost every electronic device, shoe or article of clothing we own was manufactured in East Asia. Paying them for our the consumer goods we import is completely separate from paying off our Debt....

well.it looks like it will get worse than better, the US and south korea will be doing joint military drills this sunday...from what i understand the reason why the north fired on the south was because of the drills that were taking place that day.the north phoned the south telling them not to do it,the south did it,the north fired.now the south is going to do more drills off the island with the US and north korea is not to happy about it.....i hope this will not escalate into full scale war...and both sides are talking about if anything else happens, they will respond with missle strikes....hmmm

The North can not win in this situation. They do not have enough support or power to stand up to this situation. China is not going to risk military involvement and the north knows that. The biggest mistake that the North Koreans can make is to have a missile go off target and kill US soldiers. That will bring on a response that they do not want. That's my take on this. Tomorrow will be a very interesting day indeed.
