Posting Cabela's Product Links

Post by Marc Martyn » Sun Nov 02, 2008 8:29 pm

Some of you may have noticed that Cabela's has the world's longest page link on the internet. Whenever someone copies and pastes a Cabela's page link in the forum, the page justification goes way out of whack. You end up scrolling 36" to the right to read a post.

In the future, please go to http://shrinkify.com/ instead of using the Cabela's page link? You can then shrink the URL into just a couple of letters.
Doing this will help keep the readability of the forum easier.

Thanks to Dilbert for giving us this valuable tip.:salut:

Or use a URL shrinker. We have to do that in the chat because of the 40 character/word limit (it sees URLs as one word).

This is the one I use:
http://shrinkify.com/

Here's an example of a shrunk cabela's link:

This is a test.

Here we go again.
http://shrinkify.com/fe5
Funny! When I go to that page it's available. When I go to the shrinkify link it's shown as unavailable. What gives? Did I do something wrong?

Where you go is less important than how you get there.

Hey Marc,
Shrinkify.com no longer works.
Read Below:
When we set out to build Shrinkify in 2007 we believed the concept of URL redirection was a useful one and, more importantly, we believed we could provide a better execution of the idea than anyone else out there. And that's just what we did – we built the friendliest way to shrink a long URL.
Since then, the proliferation of URL shortening services has been astronomical and our creative best efforts have been directed elsewhere. We recognize that some other folks are now actually providing a friendlier way to shrink your long URLs. We believe there is wisdom in the adage, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em".
As such, without too much regret, we announce the discontinuation of the Shrinkify service. Effective immediately we will no longer be shrinkifying new URLs. We will continue to redirect previously shrinkified URLs through the end of April 2010.
If you're looking for a new tool to shorten your long URLs, we recommend you check out our friends over at bit.ly.
Finally, we recognize that one of the biggest factors in the success of Shrinkify has been the extremely enthusiastic response to the Shrinkify extension for Firefox. We are releasing an upgraded version of the extension that will use bit.ly under the hood to shorten URLs but will provide much of the same experience that you have grown to love.
Thanks to all who have been a part of the Shrinkify experience. It's been a fun ride. Sugarhouse Labs

This works too, and you won't ever have to rely on a website to do it, use the following exactly and you'll get a "shrinkified" post every time. :thumright First, a sample to show how it's done...

SAMPLE: [ url= insert link here ] text of your choice here [/url]

I used spaces between the brackets as well as the beginning and end of the "phony" URL and "text of your choice here" so it would show the coding, be sure to remove the spaces to make it work.

Here's how it looks with an intentional space only at the beginning and end of the link to show how long the URL is...

REAL LIFE: See this

And, finally, how it looks when posted with no spaces...

REAL LIFE: See this

If you click on the last entry it will take you to Cabela's online catalog listing for their Advanced Angler tackle bags (very nice, btw) [cool]

The website has this feature built in already, no need to use outside link sources.

Just click the picture of the globe with the chain below it, insert your link, then enter a shortened text version.

You're done.
