Report to Moderator button...

I have seen a few forum scripts while floating on the net. Anything from Simple Machines Forum to PhpBB , and the like. One function these have that I don't see on this forum, is the ability to report questionable or flat out malicious posts and/or threads to a forum moderator. Generally, these are caught rather quickly...but may get missed once in a while.

For example, with Simple Machines Forum, there is a button, along with the "Edit", "Attach", and "Quote" buttons to send a PM with a link to the post or thread to a moderator.

I would have to dissect the script, but I believe the PM would be sent to the particular moderator who is responsible for that particular forum, and possibly anyone with a "global moderator" status.

Plus, I think it would be easier to identify moderators to other users. I know there was a thread somewhere in these forums that list the mod's...but not really convenient to rifle through the threads to find out. Either that, or identify them with either a "Moderator" title in their particular forum...or note the moderators on the main forum page. For example:

Classifieds- blah blah blah, etc., etc.
Moderator(s): [Insert username here], [insert username here]

Boat and Boating Topics- Blah, blah, blah, etc., so on and so forth.
Moderator(s): [Insert username here]

Just a thought...

Thanks, Marc...I knew three of the four. I was thinking about any new people that might join us and not know.

That wasn't intended for anyone to go look for the post for me...that was basically meant when new people join us, they might not know where to look.

It's really not that important to have a shiny button...can cut and paste the url just as easy.

Oops! I should make better use of the search function, instead of asking for more... :-"

No apologies needed. I think it's good the topic is being addressed again, especially after one of the more recent topics that came up. Have to say I was surprised and disappointed to see the way it was handled.

Disappointed by us moderators or the posters? I would like feedback if it is about the moderators.

ditto. From what I understand (having never seen the post) the mods were on top of an inappropriate post very quickly and got rid of it. I know because when I got home from work I had a couple members PM me to warn me about the post and it had already been pulled. I trust our four Mods judgement in these matters. That said, this episode did bring about a change in the way the Mods and myself will communicate these types of posting issues. As iPodrodder said, please PM if you have feedback you'd like to share privately.

Thanks.

I think that all of the mods are doing a great job and that the forums could not function without them keep up the good work!:thumleft: :salut:

I think the mods are doing fine. I didn't start the thread with the intentions of implying they weren't capable of doing a good job...was mainly meant to serve as somewhat of an assistance to them. :thumleft:

No, its all good. My question was directed to skeeter bassin's post.

This is just my opinion, so take it for what it is worth.

Keep in mind that this particular post had absolutely no place on this site, its title alone was completely inappropriate. The title and content were better suited to a porn site than WL.com.

The moderator that handled this decided to lock the thread and keep it open rather than deleting the topic all together.

I sent the moderator an email to find out why it was handled this way, his reply was that he wanted to keep it open so the author would have a chance to see that this was inappropriate.

We have kids that frequent this site and keeping this kind of post open is absurd. I am a father and would not allow my child to view that kind of material, and would presume most parents would not allow their children to view that.

In my opinion this topic should have been deleted as soon as possible and a message sent to the author to advise that this was inappropriate, rather than leaving open for others to view.

Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoy the site and frequent it anywhere from 5-10 times a day. But I was very disappointed in the judgement used in this instance.

I deleted it after it was locked. I got the moderator's back though. To be fair, at least he did handle it. I'd rather it be locked and edited than no action at all. Your might not like that it was left in the open, but it was done with conscious thought and effort to stem the flow. Better than nothing.

I didn't see the posts before they were edited, so I don't have a leg to stand on there.

Ahh...ok, I know the post you're talking about. Yeah...it probably could have been deleted instead of left open, but hind sight is 20/20. Fortunately it was locked so the thread didn't become any worse than it did. [-x

It wasn't that bad of a spread, was it? There was less than a day from the time it was started to the time I deleted it.

No, it wasn't up that long. IIRC, it was up during the wee hours of the night...not many on at that time of day...could be wrong on the time frame, my days all blend into one nowadays.

Don't get me wrong...not saying anyone did anything wrong...I'm just spouting off my two cents...you know, bloat the post count a little. o:)

Yea! Looking for 500. What do IMHO and IIRC stand for? I've always wondered and never gotten around to asking.

Yep, that's it...

IMHO = In My Honest Opinion

IIRC = If I Remember Correctly

it's just shorthand/acronyms for IRC (Internet Relay Chat) messages. Used to do some documentation for a content management system, had to make regular chats with people in England, France, Spain...the US, lots cheaper to use IRC or Skype than a phone.

Here's a linky to a glossary...if you ever need to know the acronyms.

thanks. Getting back to the original topic, I think that button would really help us out so we don't get PM's saying, "This thread has been running rampant for 72 hours and you haven't looked!!" That would get old really fast.
