Lets remember its not about where they came from but how are we going to manage what is here...Lets not get side tracked and try and place blame on anyone. I think we need to keep focused on the main issue here and thats to have WDFW and the Kalispels come up with a management plan that can actually be implemented and makes sense and to not have the Pikes status changed from a game fish to a evasive species and thats all right now. I think we all know from the responces we got from the show this weekend is that there are alot of people that love this fishery and want to see it managed. Remember we have the meeting tomorrow at 6:00pm at the five mile heights pizza, bring your questions for WDFW and the Kalispel Tribe biologists.

I trust the washington pike community will be well represented at tomorrow's meeting. I hope everyone has done some great research and brings some great knowledge to the table. Good luck fellow Esox Lucius Lovers. Let me know how it goes

The earlier comment was, I've never heard of one caught in the Spokane River but they had to travel through there at some point. Box Canyon just has that "niche" that they needed to thrive and become a fishable population.
Just an fyi. In the summer of 2008, my son was fishing in the spokane river under the bridge right at the Washington Idaho state line. He and his buddy were catching small mouth and trout when his buddy landed about an 18" pike. Not the main concern of this thread but I just thought I'd mention it related to the previous comment. Se you all at the meeting.

I have also caught a few up to 24" on flies around Barker. You are not allowed to keep any fish in that area, so YES, I released them.
I have a friend that use to snorkel below Spokane Falls and he has seen some huge Pike.
I have caught two in Long lake, and two in Roosevelt.

Too much water, so many fish, too little time.

Point well taken Mike, and I for one would hope that more open minded people like Stacie would join in. It turns out I even have a shirt tail relative that is "one of them" LOL, but still....Mike Carey wrote:wow, the amount of passion being voiced on this thread is something else. Please we refrain from condeeming a whole group of workers (WDFW) on this site. It's unfair to the many hard working biologists at WDFW. I'm sorry, I don't fall into a conspiracy camp on this subject.
We are fortunate to have Stacey and a growing list of WDFW biologist checking in on WL.com and providing information. Bashing them is no different than bashing other members that visit this site, and is a violation of the terms of use of the site. Please consider what you say and how you say it. Expressing an opinion is fine, being disrespectful and insulting is not. There are other web sites that are open to that but this is not one of them.
I would ask that the members that live over in Eastern Washington go to the meeting on Tuesday and ask the questions you need to ask, voice your opinions, and let us know how it goes. Thanks.
Who was it that said "for evil to prevail, all it takes is for good men to do nothing?"
I may be walking a fine line here, and if you think so, PM me and we can talk this thing out off site. Still, for now, the proof will be in the pudding. Let's see if the new lines of communications opened in the meeting are real or pretend.

Ok, I've been corrected. I've now heard of Pike being caught in the Spokane River. Really not too surprising as that is obviously the path they took to Long Lake. I still believe the Pike in the POR came via Lake Pend Oreille.Anglinarcher wrote:I have also caught a few up to 24" on flies around Barker. The bigger issue was they have had access to Roosevelt for a very long time via Long Lake. They've never got a foothold in Long Lake and are yet to do so in Roosevelt. I don't fish Roosevelt so I don't know for sure but what I hear is the habitat is not there, and the water level fluctuates enough to disrupt any spawn just like Long Lake.
Anyways, thanks again to the biologists for attending the meeting. Let's hope we can communicate and work well with them in the future, and that the way they are doing thing's works out well for everyone involved.

Well you've got to give those guys props for coming to the meeting and for speaking for almost 3 hours. Whatever side you’re on you've still have to give them credit (not that their needs to be sides). I think the article in the paper really got people fired up and it would have been nice if they had a chance to reach out to the local angling community before everyone had to read it. Also I think anglers in general would respond a lot more positively about the situation if they would let the big fish go. I know they are trying to control the population and they say they aren't "targeting" the big fish; but I think if they gave a little ground and let the big fish that weren’t dead go they would in turn have a lot more angler support. This would mean more people would start keeping all of the fish in the mid to lower twenties instead of just letting them go (like most of the generally better C&R anglers do). The bottom line Thanks again guys...

How big were the fish you caught both in Long & Rossevelt? Any pike I heard coming out of Long have been decent fish. In fact I have not heard of read of a pike under 18lbs coming from long. A contractor I use to work with pulled a 21" pike out of roosevelt about (carry the 2 add the 1) 2 years ago. An in-fisherman article from March of 1998 quoted a gentlemen by the name of Keith Jackson (I believe) that there were pike in the Columbia as well as Roosevelt although in no great numbers to even think about fishing.Anglinarcher wrote:I have also caught a few up to 24" on flies around Barker. I've noticed several times that northern pike have been referred to as an aquatic invasive species. FYI, they are actually classified as a prohibited aquatic animal species (WAC 232-12-090).
In addition, northern pike are also classified as a game fish under WAC 232-12-019.
I can understand the rational for WDFW wanting to get rid of the ambiguity by declassifying them as a game fish.
