Informative Pike Meeting March 22nd If you love PO River Pike We need everyone support

Come support fellow Pend Oreille River Pike lovers on March 22nd at 6:00pm at the 5 mile heights pizza 6409 N Maple in Spokane. We will have represenatives from Fish and Wildlife and Represenatives from the Kalispel Tribe. They will be there to explain what the plan is for the PO River and to answer questions we all have about the removel of Pike from the river. The people that are going to speak and answer questions are the same people(biologist) that actually work directly on the river. We are not looking to have a free for all, but rather to get the answers to questions we all have wheather we like the answers or not. We need everyones support and knowledge so bring your questions and joing us for a evening of Pike conversation. Dont forget to come by the BigHorn Show this weekend and say hi to the guys and girls in the Chapter 60 booth.

It's been a while since I have posted on here but I feel like this is an important topic. We have the potential for one of the best pike fisheries in the country. It is a young fishery that could continue to grow and prosper into a well balanced well maintained fishery for not just pike but all species in the river. OR it can just as easily go downhill like so many fisheries that are presented with the introduction of pike. Mis management on the part of WDFW or by the people fishing the river can easily cause this. It is a very delicate situation and I know that the Kalispel tribe and WDFW have looked at all the angles and I hope that any decision made about the river is based solely on research and science. But as with most things politics rarely take a back seat. Pike carry with them a well deserved bad reputaion of eating everything and ruining entire fisheries. This is usually the fault of poor fishery management. There will be lots of pressure put on WDFW to take the stance of implementing regulations to reduce the number of pike and manage them as a nuisance species as so many other states have done. Most of these states have fisheries that have been ruined by pike and will not get better until they change their stance. Look at fisheries in the midwest and canada that have length restrictions and you will often find very successful fisheries for all species. The killing of mature pike can be devastating to the fishery. In one year a baby pike can grow to be 6 inches. After that there is no predator in the river that can eat them except adult pike. I think it is important to see some length restrictions put in place on this river before it is too late. This is why Yankin is right and anybody who cares about this fishery should show up and show their support. Even bass fisherman have a large stake in this and should pay attention because if it is managed improperly they will lose one of the premiere bass fisheries in eastern Washington.

Thanks Gone. It is true all the other clubs who fish for Bass, Trout whatever all have a stake in what happens on the river. If they think there species of fish are immune to the gill nets their crazy. We need to all ban together to protect the fishery so that it can flurish and grow in a healthy manner. I know the Bass clubs dont like the Pike but they have to understand that when the stomach surveys were done the numbers of bass that were in there we very very low and no trout were found. So how do you blame the Pike for the lack of great Bass fishing on the river. Pike dont prefer Bass or Trout, they want perch,crappie,tinch,pike minnows,blue gill. They dont want to have to work to catch fish that are smarter, and faster. I have seen Bass with baby Pike in there stomachs so it goes both ways. If people are tired of getting snapped off by the Pike then they need to use floreocarbon leaders which we use and we catch tons of large and small mouth Bass and it keeps the Pike from taking your lures. We need to all ban together and make the best of what we are given by the river we all love....
