GPS Export help - again

Post by GeorgeK » Sat Nov 08, 2014 8:39 pm

Has anyone used this feature with any success ?

I've downloaded the potholes and Banks lake gpx files and tried to extract the hotspots (waypoints) for Navionics hotmaps explorer.

I have tried to convert to Lowrance usr files using GPSBABEL and GSAK and I get nothing, just an empty file 1kb.

I can open the gpx file in notepad and see the data in text format .

I have tried in gpsbabel to convert to gpx file from gpx file and all I get when I open it in notepad is the headers for waypoints.

My Navionics hotmaps explorer program says it can extract data from gpx files but I get nothing?.

The only thing I can see different is the the long and lat in the gpx file are in degrees point 5 or more digits and everything I see has been in degrees ,minutes and seconds .

I guess I may need to try to load the file in my Lowrance Elite - 4m and see if it will extract it ...

So I guess my question is " Has anyone used these files for their intended purpose and what am I doing wrong ? "

Thanks

George

I can't speak to Lowrance as I have a handheld Garmin. What I do is download the file to my desktop, then open the mapping program that came with my handheld, and the software (Basecamp) has an option to import the file. Once imported I can then drag it on to the handheld device.

Does your Lowrance come with some type of software for managing .gpx files? You could contact Lowrance customer support, I bet they can help.

I did a search and found this, no idea if it applies to your unit:

http://www.cruising-newcaledonia.com/im ... tters.html

BTW, it's not possible to thin the hotspots until they are imported into your software, at least that I am aware of.

Ok I been playing with these files since last night and can't get any of them to convert with any program that I could find.

Most of the programs had an error saying file is not valid gpx file or no way points found . I did get one program to convert the file but all the waypoints were lon 000000 lat 00000 .

I used GPSBABEL to try to convert but still get a 1kb file with no data. I tried to upload gpx file into the Lowrance GPS but no go.

I found a Lowrance program to convert the gpx to lowrance usr files but that one also says not a valid gpx file .

I downloaded a few gpx files from other sites and all of them converted and/or loaded in to my mapping program for viewing.
My Navionics hotmaps explorer program lets me create/import waypoints and routes to edit / view before uploading to the lowrance gps . The other gpx files I downloaded from other sites import without a problem and I could view and edit them.

I guess I could download the gpx file and print it out then hand input all the data but that really sounds like a lot of work.

Stumped again :-({|=

Upload a working gpx file with a few waypoints and I'll compare them and see what the problem is.

I had to go find one again but the forum won't let me upload it. says gpx extension not allowed.
Just tried to up load the file with no extension it but it still won't allow .

So here is a link to a few http://www.topofusion.com/gpx.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; .

I loaded and tried the Fantasy Island and the Mt. Kimball gpx files and they both work

George,

Paste this into a new text file, name it test1.gpx, and try to import it with your software. Let me know the results:

Aaron,
Looks like it worked.

Imported Panther lake and 3 waypoints with comments into map.

I can modify waypoints and save changes .

Looks like I'll be able to export waypoints to GPS .

What was the problem with the other files ?

Good job.

Thank you

This is why I never considered programing, my eyes have just become permanently crossed.

Aaron,
Semi bad news .
Downloaded potholes and banks lake files and same problem ,won't convert/import BUT>>>>>>>

I compared the test file from last night and the ones from this morning and I think I found the problem and did a check.

I loaded the potholes file into notepad and did an edit "replace all gpx: with nothing (blank) and saved it.

The file now imports as it should.

Also tried a convert from gpx to text in Gpsbabel and it converts all the data to the text file which the unedited one wouldn't do .

I was going to try it with the Banks lake file but I screwed up the file and didn't save the original so I have to wait until
tomorrow to download it again.

So I think I found a work around that will work, I'll just download the file and do an edit and it should work ok.

No one else reported any problems importing and using these files or was I the first one to use them ? If I'm the first to use them then the latest edit may need to be done .

BTW I'm not a programmer but just hate to be outsmarted by a stupid computer .

Sorry for being a pain in the butt

George

Hmmmm...I found the gpx: to be the issues as well and the new version should no longer have that...so apparently I missed something. I'll take another look. You shouldn't have to edit them once I'm done.

Just found the original Kitsap lake file on computer and did the replace all on it and it imported fine now , so it is the gpx: that is causing the problems ..

I now have Banks lake , Potholes , Kitsap and Panther Lakes downloaded, gpx file edited and imported into Navionics Hot Maps Premium Lake Explore .

All waypoint hotspots have loaded correctly (as far as I can tell ) and I'm in the process of editing the waypoints ( names ,Icons ,and such) and will then export to a Lowrance .usr file to load in the Elite -4m HD gps .

I've never fished banks lake and look forward to seeing if these hotspots help this spring ..

If we get a nice day I'll load the file into the gps and go to Kitsap lake to check out the hotspot way points.

Cool. I find the hot spots most useful when fishing a new body of water, at which point I'll start making my own hotspots as I learn the lake.
