EZ bait-holder jig

Post by HillbillyGeek » Sun Jan 27, 2008 9:54 pm

I was browsing in McDaniels and noticed that bait-holder jigs are selling for two bucks. You've gotta be kidding! It's a freakin' yarn jig with an orthodontic rubber band and a tiny bit of chenille! These things are pretty cool if you like to fish with shrimp because you can poke the hook through both sides of the shrimp and the rubber band keeps it straight on the hook.

Here's how to make one for less than 25 cents:

Hook = VMC 1/0 bronze
Head = 1/8 oz glow pearl
body/tail = Size 2 red chenille + small rubber band (the kind you put on braces) + green super-fluff yarn
Thread = Heavy red nylon

STEP 1: Start the thread wrap. I hit the first wrap with head cement to make sure it doesn't slip or twist. (Sally Hansen's "hard as nails" or super glue.)

STEP 2: Slide the rubber band over the head, wrap it in with thread, then seal again with head cement.

STEP 3: Starting from the head, wrap in a piece of yarn and leave it a bit long. It will get trimmed when the jig is finished.

STEP 4: Starting from the head, wrap in a piece of red chenille.

STEP 5: Wrap the chenille around the hook shank starting just in front of the rubber band. When you get to the head, secure the chenille with a whip finish and seal the threads with head cement. Trim the green yarn at an angle so it will be tapered on the end.

You're done! :thumright

That looks real good.
Look for Wannafish A Lure on FaceBook
He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

WOW. I have never seen a jig like that. That looks really simple to tie up as well. Well.....maybe not simple because I have a hell of a time tieing any jig/fly but it dosnt look too much harder to add a rubber band while tieing. Thanks for the new jig.

My youngest daughter has braces, and I had her get some extras for her old man. :-$

You could just use a regular rubber band by forming a loop and wrapping thread around the loose ends & the hook. Does that make sense?
