So I am curious, what size Down Rigger balls would be recommended for Puget sound? Pt Robertson, and Possiion Bar, Ship Wreck, PnP. Mind you I am using a Scotty 1085 Manual, So I want something realistic for a manual. I have heard 8# is about minimum.

I use a 10# with braided line. Works about perfect

10 works for me some use 12 or 15 but I wouldn't want to manually drag them up from 100 plus feet.

8 is a bit light unless you are targeting pinks and surface silvers. For chasing silvers down deep in the shipping lanes or chasing chinook you'll want to go with a bit more weight. At the speeds I haul around 12 pounds is about the minimum size for effectively dragging bottom for blackmouth, and I do have my downriggers spooled with braid. Look at it this way, retrieve 8lbs for x feet of line or 12lbs for a considerably shorter distance.

started out with round balls but over time they are now replaced with cans. 14oz can of lead = 14 pounds. Funny how that worked out. Trolling 3.5 mph at 120 ft deep even then there is a lot of blow back for coho in the Sound.
