Hey All,

I've appreciated the input on Picnic Point. Kayak Point is another site that the County is looking at for a habitat restoration project. It's currently in very early planning stages, and in the future I may be looking to organize a focus group for recreational fishermen to provide their input on possible changes.

Anyhow, today I was on a site visit up there and saw what I thought was a washed up shark. I went in for a closer look and it turned out to be a four foot sturgeon with a serious bite in its tail. From the size of it the only culprit I could think of is a six gill. It was really fresh, must have been swimming this morning. I'll get a picture up tomorrow. Just thought I'd share because I've never seen a sturgeon in the sound before, although I know there's some around.

Love Kayak Point but really hate the boat launch and the fact that there is no dock. I think you'll find that will be the general consensus among most fishermen who have used the launch.

theres a long and huge 300ft. dock/ fishing pier there!

Not rare at all:-# Sturgeon travel out of the rivers mouths daily to feed on Ghost shrimp and crabs in the salt.
We smack em hard in the salt water shallows light gear to 200lbs often+= We love them in the salt, sloughs and lower rivers!:compress:

Anyone wants in on this incoming tides only Ghost shrimp for bait alive and large only and Marysville Launch in town must be back on the tide swing or you dont make it back!

A few possibilities: a sea lion or shark bit the sturgeon, while the fish was alive in the saltwater. Or the sturgeon already died first (of natural causes), and then the sealion or shark took a bite out of it.

BTW check out some of the older posts in this forum (from this year) regarding sturgeon in the salt...

I'd be inclined to say a seal or sea lion bite. That water up there is too shallow for a 6 gill.

Well, I did take the time to look up what sixgills eat and Sea and Sky had the following "Although sixgill sharks are usually slow and sluggish, their body structure allows them to attain high bursts of speed when chasing and catching their prey. They are carnivorous predators, feeding mostly on cephalopods, crustaceans, fish, and rays, and some marine mammals." So it seems to me like they might go ahead and take a bite out of a sturgeon's belly. From what I saw it looks like one big, clean bite. Having seen alot of seal bitten fish working the Bristol Bay sockeye fishery I'd have to say this would be one terrifyingly large seal. I really don't know though, it might not even be a bite, but it's definitely not decay. There was no decay anywhere on the body, it was a very fresh fish.

Looks like a sea lion to me but I have clue.

Some of the smarter people around my office are guessing it could have been an orca. I'm a fan of Seal-Zilla though...

was that fish on the bottom when you got the bite off the stergruon's flesh or was it on the surface!

I've seen sturgeon jump a couple of times when I've gone out to check my crabpots. Running over to the Camano side in shallow water had one almost clear the water. That one was at least a 5 footer. Never targeted them in the salt but would love to give it a try.

Buddy in high school had a commercial license to net smelt off the beach and ended up with 6 sturgeon tangled up in his net. (25 plus years ago) That was off the north end of Camano.
