Upping my saltwater game...

I have many years experience in freshwater boating. I have had a few experiences in saltwater, but mostly out of Redondo area and mostly crabbing although I have done some attempts at fishing... I am fully self taught with boating and fishing. I am at the point where I want to start uping my game in the Sound. I have a 17' bayliner with an 85hp and a trolling motor for emergancy, but know that I should have a kicker (in time when I can afford it). The engine is rebuilt so it's dependable, but you never know. We are heading up to Birch Bay for the 4th. for 3 days and then over to Baker lake for sockeyes for 3 more days. Am thinking about taking the boat out of Blaine or somewhere further south of Birch Bay (I read Birch Bay launch is a joke), and at least cruze around some of the islands. Maybe even mooch or jig a little bit. Unfortunatly crabbing isn't open there until mid Aug. There are minus tides in the middle of the day and about an 11' shift. I want to get the experience realizing you have to push the envelope a little to do that, but I don't want to put myself or anyone else over our heads without realizing it. Any info or suggestions from anyone that is familiar with this area, either with boating and/or fishing would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks...

Dan
