Fishing from a pier
Taking my 7 year old fishing from a pier soon and was wondering what fish are possible to catch from a pier around here? BTW I will be fishing up in the Bellingham/Blaine area. Also what kind of bait should I get for the little guy to use?
Re: Fishing from a pier
Ive never fished the salt that far north but down here in area 10 I use herring and sandshrimp from the piers for perch greenling flatfish and coho salmon. What im fishing for changes my set up but those two baits will catch just about any fish that swims in the sound. Fish bigger baits high in the water under a float for salmon, hook size 1/0 to 5/0 depending on the size of bait. Smaller chunk bait for all others. On or near the bottom for flatfish greenling ect.. for perch small hooks size 8 work well with little or no weight as little as you can get away with and keep your bait near structure like pilings. Of course In lue of using the smellier salwater baits I have caught perch just on worms too like I was fishing for trout. If its all about action and not so much what the fish is put the bait on the bottom and wait for the sculpin and flatfish to pounce. But like I said I havent fished any piers that far north. Would love to hear how the outing goes.
Re: Fishing from a pier
Thanks for the response. I don't have very much experience fishing salt but I would imagine everything would be the same in my area 7 as your area 10. I personally will throw some Big Hammer jigs and see what bites while helping my son. Maybe I can get lucky and get a cabbie, halibut or greenling.
