for my butterfly jigs i use braid mainline, about 4ft of mono and a short steel leader since a dogfish took one of my jigs on my trevala rod. works fine.

I remember the first time I went shad fishing in the Columbia. Everyone around me was pulling in fish after fish and I had nothing - no bite nada. I had the same shad dart on as everyone else but (waay) heavier line. After much frustration I tried increasing the leader length and immediately got 3 fish in the next 3 casts. Others had light line with no leader and did fine. So long story short - use leader appropriate to rest of your rig.
