Blob flies

Post by reelman » Mon May 10, 2010 9:07 pm

I was reading about the "Blob" flies. They sure sounded impressive.
I wanted to try tying one so I make my own dubbing/hackle material using a sheet of cardboard to hold the chartreuse marabou and some silver mylar strands while I laid it between a doubled thread. Advice: don't do this with a hellian 4 year-old around or he will have the unstoppable compusion to blow it. After I collected as much as I could, I spun the thread to make a thick marabou hackle.
It looked pretty exciting, but the only thing it caught in 20 minutes at Williams lake was the bottom, and there it lies. I wish I had a picture for you, but I don't have an under water camera with which I could show you how cool it turned out. I tried fast retrieve, slow retrieve, super-mega fast and finally no retrieve. None worked. I know chartreuse works in that lake.
I'm going back to 'buggers.
Fly Fishing, like any faith, has varying levels of orthodoxy.
