Surf or Long beach rod recommendations??

Post by The Quadfather » Wed Jul 22, 2015 5:10 pm

I need a new surf rod, and I am standing in OE, and of course they are out any rod that will accomodate what I need.
( 1.5 hr traffic to get here, Uhg!)

Curious for any input from any of you.
Does not have to be a "True Surf rod"-- whatever that means, but it should be able throw 3-4 oz. and i prefer around 9'.

Spinning rod.....---- reel is Penn 7500 SS. Fairly large reel seat, so my Okuma SST drift rod won't accomodate the large Penn.
$75.00-150.00 range. None of the Ugly Sticks here fit the Penn as well.
Thanks for any input.

I picked up the Cabela's version of the Ugly Stick called a Whuppin stick Surf rod for Mexico. About $90, Lure weight 1-8oz, line weight 15-40. I've used it for beach casting for salmon and surf perch, it is a little heavy for those but gets the job done (and would hold your reel).
I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

Thanks Gringo. Maybe I'll take a trip up there. I know that Okuma makes another SST rod that is rated up to 4 oz. I like their drift SST rod. I was just surprised that OE left me hanging.

Thanks Spokey9. I will take a close look at the Penn rods. I am putting a trip together for the Westport Jetty, beach, etc.

The TFO surf rods are excellent. I run the 10'6" mag when I'm chucking live greenling and the light for bait on the jetty. They're awesome.
