I didn't even know these existed until recently. Out of curiosity, I went to research the regs on using these devices but couldn't find anything. I assume its legal in WA? Any idea on the regulations?
I don't plan on using one, but it seems like it would be a cool thing to throw in with backpacking gear or something, I guess.

I'd say you could probably use one legally but there would be no point to it. You're not allowed to fish with gear that's not immediately in your control so you couldn't set it up and leave it which seems to be the whole point of these gadgets. Also you couldn't set up a half dozen of them because you're generally limited to one fishing line or two with a two pole endorsement. The rule I'm referring to is in the state wide freshwater fishing rules on page 16 of the "Washington Sport Fishing Rules: Effective May 1, 2014 - June 30, 2015" rule book.
"All fishing gear must be kept in immediate
control and may not be left unattended while
fishing. Rodholders may be used, but the rod
must be easily removed without delay; rod
may be left in holder while playing the fish."
So in theory you COULD use one or possibly two but ONLY if you were sitting within arms reach of while they were fishing.
This is not a legal opinion, just me telling you how I read the regs.

Thats kind of what I figured. I know of the immediate control rule, but was wondering if there was some sort of additonal regs on a device designed to be left as an unmanned trap of sorts. I had a feeling it would still be under the immediate control blanket, though.
Thanks John!

Can you say something about what the Yo-Yo technique is?
