Man, you should have come to the WaLakes swap meet - there was some sweet deals on nice rods and reels!
What are you using it for? If you are going to purchase them separately, I would spend the bulk on the reel, then start trading up on your rods (use a cheap one for awhile, save your $$ and pick up a better one, repeat)

if you're looking for a rod, i got a couple i'd sell pretty cheap (or maybe a trade?). One is a 10' cabelas fish eagle II that's rated 10-20lb line & 1/2 -2 oz weight (it fishes like it should be rated in the 10-15lb range) and the other is a brand new (with the plastic) 8'6" cabela's proguide rated 8-12lb line & 3/8 - 3/4 oz weight. let me know if your interested might be able to save a lil bit on a rod.

Boat or bank? What methods? The answers will help determine your rod length.

Then I would recommend a 9.5' to 10.5' rod - for new probably your best bet for the $$ is an Okuma SST - they run about $65. But like I said - put the $$ into the reel if you can.

If you want to spend under C note, you'd better start watching EBay and be ready to stay up late sniping auctions. For a reel under a C note at any sporting goods store, good luck with that. Pretty much Ambassador round reels IMO.
You can usually pick up very nice rods on EBay if you shop hard and are patient. Very lightly used and new can be had for pennies on the dollar if you shop. Don't discount some of the custom rods, a lot of people making rods for a "hobby" and a little cash. Ask questions and don't tip your hand with early bids, the watch list is yor friend. The same thing goes for reels but I'd be wary of used as you never know how they're treated and you can't tell by looking at the outside.

bodo's spot on about ebay. i got my last my last reel (a revo inshore) off there for $150 brand new. cabela's might have those combos they had during the pink run, it was a abu garcia black max pair with a 8'6" proguide for around 60 bucks but that might be a lil short for float fishing anything other than small rivers or big cricks.
