Old style depth sounders/flasher

O.K. so my boat has one of those old round Lowrance depth/fish sounders in the middle of the dash. It's a 1240a and I have never used it. Likewise my friend with a '96 Ranger boat has one too, says he never turns it on. My boat is a '98 Skeeter and I understand they were more or less "standard" back then but technology has come so far since then. I much prefer my Lowrance color chart plotting GPS/sounder.
Does anyone use these anymore? Has anyone replaced theirs with something more useful? If so, what did you put in it's place?
