I bought a boat not too long ago and its time to get toys for it now :shaking2:

Its an 8ft. plastic basshunter

First I need a battery though!

I was wondering what type of batteries you guys like or dont like.

Are there types/brands that hold charge longer than others?

Any help would be great!

If you are going to put a Minnkota trolling motor on it, you will need a deep cycle battery. A standard car battery won't hold up long. They are not designed to be drawn way down on a charge. I have bought all my auto batteries from Les Schwab for years and they are good batteries. This last year I bought a deep cycle for my boat from them. It seems to work well.

If all you are going to use is a small fish finder, you can get by with Cabela's small 12v battery. I have one that I use when I don't have the motor mounted on my pontoon boat (no motors allowed lakes).

Costo sells Deep Cycle batteries for the cheapest price I've seen (around $65 as I recall). I got one in the fall and its been working great for me.

Marc,

Do you have a link or model # on the Cabela's "Small 12 V. battery" that you are talking about. When I went to their website I only saw maybe 3 batteries, all large deep cycle 12 v's.

If you plan on being a heavy user of DC power, go with an AGM style deep cycle battery. They hold a charge longer, can be recharged faster and will outlast a standard sytle lead acid battery. Optima batteries are of this design but there are others out there as well. Cabelas sells their own line of AGM batteries and even though they are pricey, are less expensive than a comparable Optima. I have an Optima that I picked up at Costco over a decade ago that still rocks. There is a thought, while you are hitting up Costco for a price on a deep cycle battery, see if they still sell Optimas.

Thanks for the quick replies, I was planning on going w/ a deep cycle and am gonna put a minn kota on it.
Ill have to look more into a battery for the finder, can you not, or is it not good to run the motor off of the same battery that the finder is hooked to?

If you run the fish finder and electric motor off the same battery, the impluses from the motor can interfere with the display of the fish finder. Always best to have seperate batteries. As I was told years ago, and have read since back then.

Vetco in Bellevue has the 7.5 hour 12V batteries for $10. They're used but they come from local hospitals as pull outs from the various "carts". They have about 90% of their useful life as FDA says replace them every few months if they need it or not, usually the latter. All the batteries are tested and good to go. I use them in UPS's for computers and where ever I need a small 12V battery. They need a 1amp 12V power supply for charging. Cheap source and you can just pick them up and save the huge shipping fees.

I am only using this very small battery that Marc linked to to run an FM tuner/cd. I have another battery for Minn Kota, f.f. etc.
I may though look into what Bodo. mentioned about the 10 dollar used hospital batteries. That was a good tip.
