At first, just what it would take to totally fix it. Take off the old transom and rebuild. Then he had other ideas but I didn't understand so I can not tell you.
I am going to discuss it again...

Toni, is the floor carpet? Next project - rip out the carpet and paint it with some of the anti-skid sealer stuff.

And final curious question - did the seller mention anything about the transom? I know its a little late now, but it really steams me if they said nothing - which I'm guessing from the fiberglass stripping they applied they knew there were issues. Grrr, I'm getting POed sitting here.

I know it's a buyer beware world but a seller has a moral obligation to be honest about known defects, IMO. When I sold that sailboat of mine I pulled the flooring and showed the guy exactly what I did. I would not have wanted him to find out after the fact and have him call me about it. And I know you would do the same.
The person I bought it from only had it 2 years. He may or may not have know. I would not have looked if Motoboat had not said anything! I didn't know. I also had some one drive behind me and say the motor didn't bounce at all.
But the motor seems to be good. This is also known as a good running motor. That being said most of the $'s spent were for the motor and not the boat.

If you don't have the funds id sell it for the loss. I replaced all the stringers in my old blue water boat and re-fiberglass the floor, painted it and laid new carpet. That dirty old project took a whole summer cost me a lot of money which I lost on selling it. If I sold it like it was id prob would've have got a little less than what I bought it for instead I spent way more that I should've. Never again will I have glass boat.

I'm OK with glass but like any boat it needs to be properly stored and cared for. My aluminium boat leaks, it's welded and is about 15 years old. It's been closely aquainted with the river bottom a few times. Fishing boats can get a lot of use and some abuse over the years, that's for sure. Grounding, hitting stuff, trailing all over the place. It sure takes it's toll over the years, doesn't it?

That would be me. Toni is a good friend and I actually met her when another scumbag took advantage of her posing as a friend who damaged a good motor and kept her from using it for a whole summer a couple of years ago. She asked me and another guy to look this boat over for her before she bought it, unfortunately I wasn't available or I would have suggested she not buy it. Either way, it is now hers and it is a great looking boat, but it's kinda' like a cute chick with a split personality - looks great on the outside but once you get her home you're in for some heart ache and disappointment! =P~

So now, after looking at it, I'm almost certain the transom is shot. So much so that the motor has distorted the top line of the transom, pulling it out of line a good 1/2" or so. Although the motor still seems solid, it's a matter of time. The glass on the outside of the transom is perfect, not a crack in it. The cracks are all at the top, where the motor has pulled the top plate out. It looks to me as if it is the victim of trailering over rough roads without a transom saver. Once the top cracked, the problem began and ply wood will wick moisture pretty fast over pretty extensively. My first thoughts were how to fix this the cheapest and easiest way, which could be to plate the transom with aluminum stock. Where I'm beginning to think this might not be the best idea, is there isn't much structurally inside the boat to mount anything to. There are two stringers along the bottom of the hull, but not much on the sides to attach anything to. The stringers on the bottom are under the replaced floor, so their condition is also suspect. I could brace everything on the inside, but if there isn't anything solid to tie it all to, it's a wasted effort. Also, to plate the inside, you still have a couple inches of spongyness between the outside glass and the inside plate, so nothing mounted to the outside will ever be real solid. Trying to weight out all options I can think of. I'm now leaning more towards replacing the wood, which will be a very big undertaking. I don't know how much materials would be, but easily several hundred dollars or more when all said and done.

The issue then is, if the transom were to be fixed, are the hull stringers any good? What is under the new floor is also a key item of concern. I have been offered shop space not too far from my place to work on it, however the time involved is also a concern as in how much time I will have to work on it. My lovely wife isn't too keen on my spending all my spare time away from the house when I have plenty of projects that need attention here to. That being said, Toni has many friends that I'm sure would be happy to pitch in their time and labor to help her out, she is very deserving.

It just sucks all the way around that this has happened. I am more than willing to do whatever I can to help her out, but there just isn't going to be a real easy way around this. She's in for some more expense and time off the water I'm sad to say. I think she could use it the way it is for a while and not worry too much, we all remember Iceshark's experiences, however she isn't going to be using it the way he used his boats, luckily she doesn't have a big Merc tower of power hanging on a rotted transom. BUT, the problem is still there and who knows how long it will last.

The water she had in the boat, didn't come from the transom, there are no cracks whatsoever below the water line on the transom, anyway. She did point out to me two patches on the bottom of the hull where it looks like the forward rollers on the trailer cracked the hull. How good these spots were repaired is a bit sketchy, from what I could see there are still some cracks around these patches.

It's a sad thing. Really a cute little boat with classic lines and it looks fantastic if you don't look too close. I'm just sick over it for her.

Thanks for the detailed update. I think everyone on this board is very sick about this situation. I would like to offer my help if you need assistance with physical labor. As I mentioned, I have some experience in boat rehab and I'd be more than willing to help any way I can.

Toni, I can imagine your quite the savvy boat shopper, now! Your going to feel so much better running the wind through your hair, with your grandson next to you. Knowing the boat your in is solid. Everything is going in the right direction, boat wise.

Update: the boat we looked at in Mt Vernon was not what it was said to be so we just had a road trip.

I think that the floor has not been replaced because after getting the seats out and walking on it I could feel the stringers.
Steve dropped me off and went back and he and Trent took the motor off and the floor up. UGGGH

This is what they found "We found that at one point someone tried to replace the flooring in this boat, but did a very poor job of fiberglassing the new thin plywood. The new plywood was very soft and buckled in several places, so we torn it out. This is what we found...
The original stringers are completely rotten, and someone put two new 2x4's in their place. But the new 2x4's are only set in and aren't really providing any support for the hull. I don't know much about building boats, but I would think the old stringers should have been completely removed and new ones glassed into the hull.
Under the new blue foam pieces we found were they had re-fiberglassed the hull where the front rollers had punched through. It looks like they actually did a pretty decent job re-glassing the hull, so that's good."

I didn't even have to get in the boat we looked at to know it wasn't what he said. I got under it and looked. The length of the keel was rubbed down to fiberglass. Steve got into the boat looked at the transom and this repaired transom had soft spots that Steve found and then he looked at the new floor. I didn't say anything but was bombarding Steve with my mind energy NO NO NO. So we stood there not saying anything and he had lowered it down to $200. I told Steve to look under the boat. So he did. This boat was suppose to be under a tarp canopy for 1.5 years. But out of the bottom of the keel, about where the windshield is on top, it was leaking water!

When we got back into the truck Steve told me that the new floor was just painted plywood.
The boat is now on craigslist for free. At least he isn't going to still try to sell it to someone.

The trailer I have is good and the motor sounds good. Steve said about the motor"It looks just about brand new under the cowl, not a spec of rust, grease, corrosion, nothing. For a motor over 30 years old, it is absolutely AMAZING!!!"

Just my 2 cents but, I'd be looking at aluminum boats. Aluminum doesn't rot or soak up water. They don't have any places you can hide rot and if they do have rotted wood it's very simple to replace, none of it is molded or glued in. Aluminum may have old foam that needs to be replaced but it's easy scrape out and replace with ballons or bladders that don't hold water. If they leak you get out a tube of sealer, if it's been beached, no glass work needed just a little paint. Even if the entire transom needs to be replaced, it's one piece of marine ply, rip out the old, cut out a new one and bolt it back in place. Glass boats just have way too many places to hide problems, there were / are no standards for resins and construction so if it floats, let he buyer beware.

It's a bad deal, it just gets worse and worse the more we dig. As it stands right now, it will take a lot of work and funds to put it back together. Toni loves the boat and if possible, she'd like to fix it. Any donations to the cause?

Are we talking the original boat she purchased?

I've had a couple members now asking about helping out. Steve, what are we talking about here, specifics please.

I'm one who asked Mike about this. Steve, like Mike says, we need specifics. Have you completed your tear down and damage analysis? Have you started or completed your materials and supplies required to effect repairs?

I'm willing to help out, but before doing so, I'd like to know this won't be something that will "run on" once you start. I've got years of experience with this on cars, and have seen it first hand from that perspective. An estimate is just an estimate until everything is opened up and exposed. Only then will the extent of damage, and cost to repair, be known.
