Yes I do have a paddle. I have thought about going out in the sound...you know those days that are mirror like. I would like to go in a boat after pinks but I also know that the sound may not be the safest place for an inexperienced boater. But I do have crab nets and I have seen people in little boats like mine with an electric motor out at Dash Point before.

congrats on the new boat! Your fishing options just increased tremendously. Make sure your motor is safe and doesn't get stolen sitting in your driveway. Ethier remove it between trips or lock in on to the boat.

Do you have any boater's insurance? A cheap policy to cover loss (mainly for the motor) and basic liability would be good to have. Is it trailered? Spare tire?

No, I didn't get a new boat. I just registered the same old one. I got a 4 hp mercury outboard to put on it. Boat, trailer, and motor are all vintage mid to late 70's. But it will open up opportunities to go on bigger lakes. No boat insurance and I won't store the motor on the boat. I won't trailer the motor on it either. Yep I have a spare tire if I remember to put it back in the vehicle.

I have always had a lock on the hitch part of the trailer.

If you want to chase pinks, the only place I could recommend with a clear conscience would be Elliot Bay. Launch at either Salty's or under the 1st Ave Bridge. Keep it in close. The sound is big for boats twice that size.

I was thinking of Commencement Bay for Pinks. Toward the Puyallup. But I may not go out 'cause I don't know a lot about the winds and tides that can come up. 4 hp is not much power.

Toni,
I have a similar setup to you. I have a small, mostly water resistant, duffel bag that I carry my boat gear in. For my registration (when needed), I put it in one of these Clear Plastic Mailing Tube. You should be able to find them locally if interested. In my bag I carry the registration (in tube) my down rigger weights, a bag of latex gloves, pliers, whistle, jacket, rope, etc. Mostly emergency gear and a few comfort items. When I load up the boat, I just throw the duffel in the truck with my fishing gear.

I have taken my boat with 4hp Evinrude out on the Sound up by Muckilteo and down in Henderson Bay. It's certainly unnerving the first few times and I'm always "on guard", so to speak. Not something I would recommend to most people.

Good luck.

Unless you're on Federaly controlled waters like Lake Washington, Sammamish, and American Lake, among other lakes and rivers inland. As I understand it.
Yep, true, But I have to ask, why is American Lake considered a federally controlled waterway?

A lot of it is owned by the military(federal) might be a good reason.

I was waiting for somebody to ask that. :)

As I undersatnd it many years ago, like during WWII, the Army used the lake for training. Therefore had federal control of the lake. And classified as a 'Federal waterway'. Beings the Army still has it's base along much of the southern shoreline they still concider the lake as federaly controled/regulated. :)

Hey, Toni! I know I'm going to meet you someday, having grown to like you on this and other forums.

I'm not real knowledgeable about what is legally required but a pfd is required and if children are in the boat they must be wearing them. Silly not to for anyone.
I know a few years ago there was a big push on being legal and they were writing people up for things like not having a whistle, and flare or light of some kind.
You can get those little air horns in a can at most sporting goods stores. I've had one for years and never used it but think I'll check to see if it still works.

Other things everyone should have is a length of good rope, floatation cushions or the like, a good flashlight just in case you are out longer than intended, some tools for that motor.
Also you should have a cooler for your favorite beverage and food, a portable radio for classical music,(fish like classical), at least one fishing rod and assorted gear.
The gear isn't very important because whatever the fish are hitting on is what you don't have.
A depth/fish finder though I've always considered those to be cheating. Also your lucky hat that isn't and two or three layers of clothes that you can add or take off, depending on weather.

A knife.
Also a paddle might be fine if you are close to shore but I wouldn't go without a set of oars. Paddling a boat is a slow, cumbersome, tiring thing to do. A set of oars and you can move fine unless there's a strong wind.

Just don't forget to have fun.

Well I have my Android phone that has a light (app) in it. I can get music, youtube, and my email if I want. I wonder if I can find a whistle app for it? Then I might not have to have the other stuff nor the need for the second boat.
Although I sure would like a larger boat so I can stand up when my legs get cramped.

Thank you guys for your sense of humor...it is nice to smile :flower:
