Helpful Info on Temperature

Im not sure how accurate this is for our area, but i have a book that says the prefered water temp for these fish:

Channel/Bullhead catfish - 78 degrees
Bluegill and sunfish - 75 degrees
LMB - 73 degrees
Crappies - 71 degrees
SMB - 70 degrees
Walleye - 69 degrees
Perch - 68 degrees
Cutts - 55 degrees
Rainbow - 55 degrees
Kings/Silvers - 55 degrees

Looks like a reasonable list...thanks for sharing it JT26. That should help answer a few little remaining questions some people have regarding water temps...

Any other similar information? Like ideal/preferred spawning temp?

again, this seems like it would be different for our region..but heres what i got.

It says panfish, like crappie and sunfish spawn on hard, sandy bottoms with emergent vegetation, like bullrushes, especially when in a bay or sheltered shoreline. upper 60's

For large mouth bass it says in protected bays and shorelines with a firm bottom, back ends of shallow bushy creek arms.
and in rivers for LMB's it says shallow, dead end sloughs, and other backwaters of the main river, shallow stump fields, and sandbars. The spawn normally starts in the low 60's when the males come up to build the nest, and whe it gets to the upper 60's most spawning is done.

Smallies spawn in protected waters, near stumps or rocks when the temp gets to 60-65 degrees. also in sheltered sand gravel bays, bullrush beds adjacent to deep water, shallow points with scattered boulders

Perch spawn when the water is in the mid 40's on weeds, rocks and sticks.

That list JT provided wasn't for ideal spawning temps, it was just for preferred temps.

well sam can u confirm the bass thing i thought they spawned in the 50 degree water and JT it seems your perch maybe spawning at my secret lake yeah i think the bass should start to spawn with the warm weather we shoud have heading in this week

Warmer then 50 degrees. Post a question in the bass forum and I'm sure one of those guys will give you a better answer. Mid-upper 50's I think...Don't hold me to it though

last time i checked kutt the temp was at 48 degrees so warmer then beaver and i believe the perch may be spawning right now there which means food for bass and the bass should be spawning soon as it is a very shallow lake

i would say in two weeks the bass should start to be on there beds and it is only 15 feet at its deepest part so there are tons of perch too but what boat are we gonna fish out of kk

I know that some believe that regionally this changes some, and perhaps it does, but it looks pretty close to me.

There are Bass doing a pre-spawn feed at about 50 Degrees, and most Crappie around here also move inshore to put on the feed bag about that time, but......................

I have never seen a LMB "bed" in water lower than 60 degrees, or higher than 70 degrees.

Fox weather said no Snow or rain for next 5 days. Lets say we have 5 days at 50 degree daytime high. So how fast can a lake warm up? If the water temp today was 43-46. How much each day?

I understand that we are not forced to read these threads, but they are unnecessary and many of which can and should be discussed using the PM function.

yeah i would say that by the end of the week your lake could be at 48-51 degrees which should be good for some surface activity for trout
