What did we catch?

Post by dustinhu » Mon Oct 09, 2017 7:21 am

Fishing on Lake Sammamish yesterday and my son pulled this up on some powerbait he threw out there. I'm just starting to fish on Lake Samm and didn't recognize it as a trout or bass, curious to what it is.

Thanks,
Dustin

It has a larger mouth is a squawfish = bad fish. KILL IT!

Kinda the same looking fish with a smaller pea sized mouth is a Peamouth = good fish. DON'T KILL IT!

Also say Pikeminnow. Ok if you pickle or pressure cook them for a while but if you pan fry them it will look like a porcupine with the number of bones coming out of it. They taste pretty good though.

A Native fish.
If you want to kill something try Bass. They are non native and everywhere.

I'm also all about getting rid of bass where they don't belong. Lake Washington and sammamish to name a few

You'll never get bass out of lake Washington or Sammamish. They do just fine there. [biggrin]

They do fine but don't belong there. They don't belong anywhere in this state. I'm not against bass where they don't impact native species. Either way this topic is about what he caught and this discussion is for another topic completely

FYI - Northern Pike Minnows make excellent bait. I use them as bait in my crab traps and I salt cure fillets for use with lures when targeting cutthroat trout and lakers.
