Lake Wenatchee

Post by natetreat » Mon Jul 28, 2014 12:43 pm

Got a few days off, I've never fished it, but would like to. Looking for info.

Where's the best place to launch, how far is the fishing grounds from the launch... is the access open because of the fire?

Recalling from last year's info: Launch is on the East end, fish hang out at the West end. We were just driving through on the way back from a camping trip, nosed into the State Park for a look, crowded but people were having fun!

We are fishing it right now. State park on east side, single lane, limited parking. We parked in our camping spot with the trailer, short walk. There is a camp ground with launch on SE shoreline, close to the end of the lake. Only seen it from the water, looks ok. Fish are all over but concentrated on west end which is also where most anglers are. About 100 boats today. Standard sockeye gear, most fish marks are 30-70 feet. Pretty good bite today, saw a lot caught. We have (so far) 5 in the cooler. We lost 5 and got a nice dolly (released). 95 or so today, toasty! Everything is open from west.

A whole lot more fish, but half the size of a baker lake sockeye. These fish are much more willing to bite. Having a decent afternoon random bite action. If you're staying at the park check for availability. Looks like there is plenty of space but check first.

Every fisherman has had one of those days where everybody around you is getting fish and no matter what you do you can't get a bite. I just spent a day just like that. On the water at 7am at Lake Wenatchee. Fished for 8 hours with out a bite. Every boat around us was getting fish. We talked to several folks as we would pass and I was using the same dodger, hooks, trolling at the same speed and same depth as everybody else, but 8 long hot hours and not a bite. My wife lost 2 fish and released a dolly. We fish about 20 days a month year around and I seem to always be able to tune into the fish and put them in the boat, but today no matter what I did I just couldn't get it right. Well were here for a week or two so hopefully I figure it out, Tomorrow is another day.

HB, if you see us give a shout. We started dead slow but slowly got our fish. Had as many fall off as we caught. Afternoon bite was decent until the wind came up and made it too much work. We have 8 in the cooler and are moored up for the night. Hitting again tomorrow morning. You'll get em tomorrow. Did you try bare hooks?

Mike
We were also out there yesterday. I'm sure we went by each other at some point. We had a real good bight until about 8 and then it slowed way down.

Too bad we missed you.another good morning bite, has really slowed now. We have 7 and lost about the same. There was one boat, locals, who were slaying them just long lining dodgers and bare hooks, maybe 3 Oz weight? Fast troll, 1.4. I was impressed. Most of us are trolling .8 to 1.2 and not near as successful. Odd thing is I'm marking fish 35-65 and catching 40-65 feet. Old school, dodgers and bare hooks with short leader, 12". Pink and orange hooks for us. Two days, 15 fish, I'm not complaining!

Nice Mike. I've been getting baker pretty dialed in, but a limit of three is just not enough sockeye!

Sounds like you guys are doing good over there. So in my readings there is more than one boat launch? Locatoins and what times they open? I saw on line the state park opens at 630. Thanks

True, it would be more action, but I'd take 3 bigger fish over 6 smaller fish any day, especially if they are 1/2 size of Baker Sockeye like Mike said they are.

Sounds like a blast! How are the shape of the fish mike? I have been contemplating running to baker in my 12ft livingston or hitting lake Wenatchee. Thanks!

I think the condition of fish is fair, but everyone seems to have a different idea of what "fair" is and most prefer ocean bright. I think they are delicious, especially smoked! but on the grill is good food too. The State Park launch is active at 4am, so I don't know about what time it opens, just follow the rules for parking and paying for launch, because they will ticket you for not complying.

What a difference a day makes. We put 12 in the boat by 2:30. The adjustments we made were, I tied the hooks closer together and shortened the leader from 14" to 12". We also fished farther behind the boat, 45' to 60'. the wife got the first fish about 6:15 in front of the burn area, then we headed for the south shore. We picked up the next 9 in that area. We wound up getting the last 2 as a double just east of the burn area. We started fishing at 30" in the morning and as the day got hotter we went deeper. Hey Mike what color boat do you have? I looked for you all day. We are about the only orange Hewes out there.Give us a wavy, we should be here for another week or so then I thinking about heading back to Sekui.

Hey All, just got back, cleaned fish ( almost two hour job including curing eggs), I'll write up a detailed report. The second launch is a camp ground on the SW side of the lake. I only saw it from the boat and found it online, Glacier Campground I think it was. I tried calling, no answer, so I have no info on it. The state park launch is a pain, but it is what it is. Remember if you're day use you need a Discovery Pass. If you overnight make sure there are spots available. We found one each night and I had to move the truck/trailer. Slept on the water in our boat (grey 18 ft Seaswirl). All done, this was the last sockeye lake trip for us. Kinda sad, but what a two day fishing adventure!
