Could someone tell me what this is?

Post by arniejl » Sun Aug 05, 2012 3:35 pm

Caught this in Summit Lake today, Sunday, August the 5th. I have never seen one of these before. It did not fight, really, at all. Caught it on a green pumpkin tube in 8 feet of water.

I have seen quite a few Koi in Spanaway Lake, but never a fish like this. It is kind of gold...in places.

I hate catching weird fish because I never know how to handle them, you know, like do they have teeth. This one did not. I started to lip it but then changed up to the gill plate. It's mouth was wider, like a cat fish. Kind of thought it was a cat, at first.

Posted this on another site and this was the answer that I got, squawfish, or yes, Northern Pike Minnow.

Thanks!

Definitely a northern pike minnow, aka squawfish, one of the least impressive fighting fish in our waters. On a positive note, they do make great crayfish, crab and shrimp bait though.
